The South Winn volleyball team (3-8) picked up three wins in five tries over the weekend.
Saturday, the Warriors were at the five-team round robin tournament at Jesup and picked up its first three victories of the season, finishing third.
“This was a fun day for us getting to play a lot of volleyball and getting some consistency in areas we had struggled with. Getting to play two conference opponents in advance of conference play also was a nice way to get a preview of what we will see down the road. Picking up the third set victory over Elkader was also nice momentum for us as we had dropped a couple of deciding sets earlier in the season,” said Coach Alex Smith.
The day began with a loss to North Linn (7-4) by set scores of 11-21 and 10-21. South Winn would rebound to take the next three matches of the day over Alburnett (2-10) with sets of 21-14 and 21-19, West Central (1-6) by sets of 21-17 and 21-19 and Central Elkader (3-12) by scores of 21-8, 18-21 and 15-8. The Warriors dropped the final match to the host J-Hawks (7-3), by set scores of 7-21 and 8-21.
Katrina Hageman and Abby Wagner paced the way for the day with 17 and 12 kills, respectively. Ali Heying dished out 41 assists with Eryn Luzum putting up 33 digs from the libero position. The Warriors served with consistency and toughness all day with Avery Humpal leading the way with five aces.
The Warriors will host a triangular Thursday, Sept. 16, with West Central and Wapsie Valley beginning at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 18, South Winn will take part in the Nashua-Plainfield tournament at 9 a.m.
