Kicking off the season with a rivalry game is always a challenge; however, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (1-0, 1-0 UIC) made it look easy Tuesday as the Warriors overtook Turkey Valley (1-1, 0-1 UIC) in Calmar, 74-50.
The Warriors opened the game on a 16-1 run in the first 3:16 of the game before TV sophomore JD Kruse sank the first basket at the 2:01 mark. By the end of the first quarter, SW held a 23-10 advantage with a pair of key Trojan seniors already on the bench with two fouls. TV’s offense came alive in the second period, eventually cutting the Warrior lead to single digits, but still trailed 39-29 at halftime.
Two quick Trojan baskets to open the third quarter brought TV to five, before the Warriors went on a 15-0 run, leaving the visitors scoreless through the middle of the period and a SW 62-38 lead with eight minutes remaining. In the final quarter, the Trojans just couldn’t find the defensive stop to make a run as it suffered the loss.
“Coming away with the victory at home was great. I thought we played really well in stretches and our defense created some turnovers that led to points, our offense moved the ball well to get good looks. We still a lot of room for improvement, we played sloppy at times giving up easy looks and settling for poor shots on offense,” said SW head coach Derek Taylor.
Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
