The South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-11, 3-9 UIC) hit the boards hard Tuesday as the Warriors played North Fayette Valley (11-4, 9-4 UIC) on the road, falling 50-31.
After the Warriors got in the board first, it was a back-and-forth battle in the opening period in which the TigerHawks won 10-6. In the second frame, NFV’s full court press was more than SW could handle as the home team went ahead by as many as seven with 5:00 to play in the half. At the break, NFV continued to hold the advantage after a trey at the buzzer to make it 21-13.
NFV’s pressure continued in the second half as the TigerHawks extended its lead to 34-21 with eight minutes to play and rolled on to the win.
“I believe we took a big step forward in this game. We hung in there with a team that we really struggled against the first time we played them earlier this year,” said Coach Justin Izer. “I was hoping to go down five at halftime but NFV hit that big three as time expired to extend their lead to eight. A slow start to the second half helped NFV extend their lead and we just couldn’t compile enough stops to shrink that lead.”
Putting up a double-double in the contest for the Warriors was Janessa Zweibahmer with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan Kleve was also in double figures with 10 points to go with five boards. Ali Heying connected for eight points, while Josie Tieskoetter added two points and eight rebounds.
The Warriors have two more road games this week as they play a rescheduled contest at West Central Thursday, Jan. 27, and a game at Central Elkader Friday, Jan. 28. Next week, South Winn will be at Turkey Valley Tuesday, Feb. 1.
