Warriors nearly escape with win over Bulldogs

By Becky Walz,

Starting slow, the South Winn volleyball team (8-19, 2-4 UIC) nearly captured the come from behind win from MFL MarMac (12-11, 4-2 UIC) at home Thursday. The Warriors ended the night with a 3-2 loss with set scores of 20-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-18 and 11-15.
After MFL gained the early momentum with the first two sets, the Warriors came back in a fury pulling out wins in the third and fourth. The Warriors started connecting offensively and served tough all night long with 16 aces on the night. The Warriors also pounded out 34 kills to 14 errors on the evening.
Katrina Hageman and Abby Wagner led the way with eight kills each. Ali Heying dished out 23 assists and Eryn Luzum paced the way defensively with 19 digs.
“We knew going in we would face one of the top hitters in the conference which presented some challenges. I thought we did a great job serving and putting them in some difficult situations, but unfortunately couldn’t quite overcome our slow start to pick up a conference win. I was really proud of how we responded in sets three and four in front of our home crowd,” said Coach Alex Smith.
In the final week of the regular season, South Winn hosted West Central, Monday, Oct. 11, and will be at Postville Thursday, Oct. 14.
