Warriors net win in opener

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-0, 0-0 UIC) is on the right track, picking up the win in the season opener Monday night at North Butler, 53-38.
The Warriors used a big second quarter to pull away from the Bearcats.
“We came out with a hard fought 53-38 win. Offense came alive in the second quarter ignited by a 15-point quarter from Morgan Kleve,” said Coach Justin Izer. “Our defense was solid all night as we forced a lot of turnovers.
After going back-and-forth, the Warriors held a slim 8-7 advantage after the first quarter. Kleve ignited the South Winn offense in the second with a pair of treys to go with three buckets and a trio of free throws to pull the Warriors out front 31-18 at halftime.
South Winn opened the second half with a strong defensive stand, allowing North Butler to score just three points. The Bearcats attempted to cut into the Warriors advantage, but it was too little, too late as SW still put up 13 points in the final eight minutes.
The Warriors were led by Kleve who put up 16 points and pulled down five boards. Senior Janessa Zweibahmer had a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Also in double figures was Tieskoetter with 11 points to go with eight boards and six steals.
South Winn was back in action Tuesday, Nov. 23, for their first home game of the season. The Warriors hosted UIC’s Clayton Ridge. Complete game coverage will be available in the Tuesday, Nov. 30, Driftless Journal.
