Warriors on a roll, improve to 3-0 to start season

By Becky Walz,

Confidence is building for the South Winn boys’ basketball team (3-0, 2-0 UIC) after it picked up back-to-back wins Friday and Saturday night over West Central and Mabel-Canton.

Conference contest
The Warriors put together impressive two quarters versus West Central (0-3, 0-2 UIC) Friday at home, leading to a 63-48 UIC win.
South Winn ran out to a 22-1 advantage in the first period before the squads traded baskets in the second as the Warriors were up 34-13 at half. The Blue Devils kept the Warriors off the boards in the third, closing the gap to 43-35 with eight minutes to play. SW put the game away in the final quarter, outscoring West Central 20-13 for the win.
“I was happy to see Dawson Wenthold knock down a couple of threes, which we will need him to keep doing this season to help stretch opposing defenses,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “Their (West Central’s) zone defense gave us some issues in the second half, something we will continue to work on in practice. When the defense rotates well, we look really good, we just have to do it more consistently as the season moves on.”
Trey Kriener had the touch with 22 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Warriors. D. Wenthold provided 11 points, while Keagen Streeter had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Border Battle
Returning to action Saturday, the Warriors defeated Mabel-Canton in the Border Battle 53-44 on the Luther College campus.
“It’s always tough early in the season to play back-to-back nights, we came out flat but the kids did a great job of grinding it out to get the win against a solid Mabel-Canton team. We gave up seven three-pointers in the game and made things tough on ourselves,” said Coach Taylor. “We got the offense rolling in the fourth quarter putting up 23 points, with Dawson Wenthold hitting another big three. Trey Kriener started imposing his will inside and Carson Wenthold hit four straight free throws late to put the game away.”
For the night, Kriener knocked down 21 points to go with seven boards and five assists. Streeter came off the bench for 10 points and four rebounds. C. Wenthold had a balanced attack with eight points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Coming up
South Winn will be at MFL MarMac tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 7) before entertaining the New Hampton Chickasaws in a non-conference tussle Thursday, Dec. 9. Both varsity contests are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
