Warriors on eight-game win streak; 14-2 in UIC play

By Becky Walz,

With eight varsity games slated for the week, the South Winn baseball team (21-5, 14-2 UIC) moved over the 20 win mark for the season earlier this week sweeping MFL MarMac and taking a non-conference game from Janesville.

Seniors recognized
The Warriors moved to 14-2 in UIC play with the doubleheader sweep, 12-2 and 7-0, over MFL MarMac (10-15, 8-8 UIC) Monday as the program celebrated the accomplishments of its five seniors — Aidan Tollefsrud, Cael Kuboushek, Briar Tigges, Jacob Herold and Ethan Luzum.
Strong pitching continues to be the theme for the Warriors as the staff of five on the night allowed just five hits, one earned run, struck out 27 and walked just three batters. Ethan Luzum and Keagen Streeter picked up the wins on the mound. Also climbing the hill for SW were Jordan Buchheit, Kuboushek and Tigges.
South Winn scored runs in all but the second frame to get the win in game one, including a five-run fifth frame. Nick Holien had a big first game offensively going 3-4 with a triple and walk off home run to get the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning. The junior drove in Streeter who led off the inning with a long ball to left field that bounced off the top of the fence and back into the field of play for a double.
The nightcap was more of the same as the Warriors once again had a five-run inning, pushing most of their runs across homeplate in the third. Tagging the ball for doubles were Kuboushek and Holien. Logan Hageman and Herold provided multi-hit games with Herold driving in three runs.
“This was a fun night to celebrate our seniors as we played well in all facets. We’ve really shown some great strides in the past couple weeks and hope to continue to build off that,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Wildcats confined
South Winn picked up a quality non-conference win over Janesville (13-3) Tuesday evening on the road.
After the Wildcats scored two in the first, the Warriors were able to scratch two runs off the Janesville ace pitcher in the fourth inning to tie the game. Janesville answered with its own run in the fourth to retake the lead, but a big three-run fifth inning provide the offense the Warriors needed to go ahead and hold the lead.
The Warriors capitalized on seven walks and a hit by pitch to earn free bases and pounded out nine hits in the game. Nick Holien continued his hot streak with three hits including two doubles.
The Warriors pieced the game together on the mound with quality innings by Holien, Herold, and Tigges picking up the win in relief tossing the final three innings.
“We were excited to see the top arm for Janesville as our guys want to face top arms as we gear up for postseason play. I was proud of how the team competed and wanted to make plays and be at the plate late in the game,” said Coach Smith.
