Warriors open UIC play with sweep

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn baseball team (4-0, 2-0 UIC) opened conference play with a doubleheader sweep over North Fayette Valley (0-4, 0-2 UIC) at home Tuesday, 15-0 and 12-2.
Solid pitching efforts from four Warrior pitchers and just one error between the two games provided the defensive effort the Warriors were looking for. Offensively the Warriors had several extra base hits and stole double digit bases to put together several big innings.
“I was pleased with our progress offensively from last week to this week and hope to continue to show improvement in the coming days as we get set for a big stretch of games. Our pitchers were efficient on the mound, and we have a number of guys looking forward to getting their opportunity,” said Coach Alex Smith.
It took just four innings for the Warriors to end game one, tallying three runs in each of the first two innings. A nine-run fourth put the game away for good. Senior Ethan Luzum rung up six batters during his three innings on the mound. Offensively, the Warriors saw Logan Hageman blast a bomb over the fence while Luzum and Keagen Streeter each rapped out doubles.
In the nightcap, SW needed five frames to complete the sweep, plating runs in each inning for the win. Winning pitcher Cael Kuboushek helped his own cause as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBI. Briar Tigges also drove in three runs for the Warriors.
South Winn will be on the road at MFL MarMac Thursday, June 3 for a JV/varsity doubleheader with the first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. Warrior fans will see the JV/varsity back in action at home Friday, June 4 versus Mason City. Monday, June 7, SW travels to New Albin to take on Kee High for a varsity twinbill.
