Warriors push TigerHawks to five sets

By Becky Walz,

The volleyball teams of South Winn (7-17, 1-2UIC) and NFV (13-10, 5-0 UIC) faced off in a highly competitive match on Monday evening. The Warriors got momentum early with victories in the first two sets (25-23, 26-25), but NFV stormed back in front of their home crowd to take the final three sets (19-25, 19-24, 11-15) and secure a key conference win over the Warriors.
Janessa Zweibahmer had a big night on the front line with 12 kills followed by Abby Wagner with 10. Ali Heying dished out 20 assists while Eryn Luzum put up 26 digs. The Warriors served consistent and tough as a team all night going 91-for-101 with eight aces.
“I felt really good about our focus and mentality going into this match by our players. They really wanted to compete with one of the top teams in our league, and they played with tremendous energy all night. This was by far some of the best defense we had played all season. Ali (Heying) did a great job spreading the ball around to our hitters as well to keep NFV off balance. Unfortunately, after those big first two set wins, we could quite put together a run grab a lead and get momentum as the night went along. I’m confident moving forward we will find a way to close out the deciding sets,” said Coach Alex Smith.
The JV and varsity squads have a week between competitions as South Winn won’t play host to Kee High until Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
