Warriors shut out Eagles, Hawks

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn baseball team (18-5, 12-2 UIC) put themselves in a position to take a share of the conference lead in the standings by picking up the 7-0 win over Clayton Ridge (5-14, 4-9 UIC) Wednesday on the road. Thursday, the Warriors extended their conference game win streak to nine with the 5-0 victory over Kee (20-8, 11-2) in Calmar.
Saturday’s rains canceled the triangular the Warriors had scheduled with Wapsie Valley and Beckman.

Caging WarEagles
It was another strong pitching performance, this one by junior, Nick Holien, provided the momentum early and the Warrior offense was able to score in four innings including three insurance runs in the sixth.
Cael Kuboushek and Ethan Luzum had two big offensive nights at the top of the order highlighted by a four-hit and 3 RBI performance by Luzum. In all, South Winn had 12 hits
“This was a big stretch of road games for our guys to get through and our pitching over these four games couldn’t have been much better. We knew we would count on some guys that hadn’t thrown a lot of innings thus far, and Nick did a great job today in the starting role,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Big win
Ethan Luzum carried a no hitter into the seventh before allowing a leadoff single. He settled in to record the next three outs. He struck out seven and walked none with his complete game shutout. The Warriors were solid defensively committing just two errors on the evening. Timely hitting and solid base running produced the five runs.
“Our guys have been looking forward to this game since we dropped a couple of games at Kee early in the season. Our focus in all facets was some of the best we’ve seen. This was a great environment for our guys to play in and should prepare us well for the postseason,” said Coach Smith.
It was a pitcher’s duel with only five total hits in the game, four for the Warriors and one for Kee. Pounding out timely doubles for SW were Luzum and Keagen Streeter, while Logan Hageman and Nick Holien had the other hits for the Warriors.
