Warriors sweep Trojans in baseball

By Becky Walz,

Starting a busy week of competition Monday night, the Turkey Valley baseball team (5-13, 5-7 UIC) hosted South Winn (15-5, 9-2 UIC) with the Warriors sweeping the doubleheader, 10-3 and 5-0.
According to Warrior Coach Alex Smith, “Dominating pitching was the key to success with Keagen Streeter picking up the win in game one and Jordan Buchheit in game two. On the night the Warrior pitching staff struck out 26 batters and walked five and the offense put pressure on the Trojan defense and was able to capitalize on some miscues. We knew going in that Turkey Valley would compete and stay in the game. Both games were tight going into the latter innings and we were fortunate to tack on some insurance runs to put ourselves in a comfortable position.”
“The boys battled, and I thought our pitching was good all day. We have to find some ways to produce runs,” said TV Coach Dan Stepan. “I need to do a better job of getting us ready to play defense.”

On target
In game one, the Warriors secured the 10-3 win by scoring in five of the seven frames. Cael Kuboushek reached base on an error to start the contest, stole second and later scored on another Trojan error. SW’s Jacob Herold raced around the diamond in the second frame, making his way to third on a misplayed fly ball to right, scoring two batters later. South Winn had their big inning in the third, plating four runs on two hits.
Trojan Garrett Kurtenbach put the home team on the board in the fourth after he was issued a walk on four straight balls. TV proceeded to load the bases when Kalvin Langreck was hit by a pitch and Caleb Kurtenbach was walked. A base hit by Garrett Kurtenbach led to the Trojan run before the next two TV batters went down.
With SW leading 7-1, the Trojans struck again in the fifth with a Dylan Reicks’ double, as the junior later scored on a Warrior overthrow to first base. G. Kurtenbach scored his second run of the game later in the fifth as well to make it 7-3.
After pushing three more runs across home plate in the sixth, the Warriors sat down the final six Trojan batters to claim the 10-3 victory.
The Warriors had seven hits. Jacob Herold had a two-hit game with a double, while Keagen Streeter whacked out a double and an RBI. Streeter threw for five innings for the win, fanning 11 batters.
Turkey Valley had three hits — two by Dylan Reicks and one by G. Kurtenbach. Climbing the hill for the Trojans were Noah Hanson, Chase Hayek and Caleb Kurtenbach.

Nightcap
The second contest saw the Warriors win 5-0, scattering eight hits throughout the seven frames, and holding TV to three hits.
Dayten Ondrashek’s single in the first inning turned into a run following a Trojan miscue and a Logan Hageman ground out. Kuboushek scored his second run of the night in the third inning on a walk, stolen base and sac fly.
South Winn tacked on two runs in the sixth. Herold singled and scored on a double by Streeter, who later scored himself on a Wenthold single. Logan Hageman added to the Warriors’ win with a run in the seventh.
On the mound, Jordan Buchheit got the win, throwing four innings. Kuboushek and Wenthold both threw in relief.
Providing doubles in the second outing were Kuboushek, Nick Holien and Streeter, while Herold stole three bases.
Climbing the hill for the Trojans were Carson Busta and Oliver Schmitt.
