Warriors take care of Pirates

By Becky Walz,

Things looked good Tuesday night for the South Winn boys’ basketball team (1-0, 1-0 UIC) as the Warriors defeated Postville (0-1, 0-1 UIC) on the road, 60-20.
SW never trailed in the contest, taking a 23-7 lead after the first quarter. The Warriors continued to crash the boards and hit their target in the second period to take a 35-17 lead into the locker room. After the break, South Winn only allowed the Pirates to collect three points, shutting Postville out in the fourth period.
“Overall, I was happy with our effort for the first game of the year. Defensively we gave up a few easy looks on miscues and a couple more drives to the basket then I like to see, but those are things we will correct. We had good pressure on the ball, forced a few turnovers and rebounded well,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “On the offensive end we shot over 50% from the field and kept our turnovers down which is always a good sign. We are a little rusty on our outside shooting and forced a few things, but that will come around as we get more time in the gym.”
Leading the way for the Warriors with 15 points and four steals was Nick Holien. Adding 14 points and seven boards to the mix was Trey Kriener. Keagen Streeter provided eight points and eight rebounds, while Carson Wenthold had six points and eight steals.
South Winn hosts West Central Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors will be back on the hardwood Saturday, Dec. 4, as part of the Border Battle at 7:15 p.m.
