By Becky Walz,
The South Winn wrestling team closed out the first half of the season Tuesday, Dec. 21, in Harmony with a pair of wins over Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) and Waukon.
The Warriors defeated FCLMC, 63-15 and Waukon 60-24, moving South Winn to a 9-2 dual record this far in the season.
“I was most impressed with how aggressive we were, I thought we were always looking to score points whether that was from neutral, top or even moving on bottom. These wins have us finishing on a positive note before the break which is a good thing for this team,” said Coach Jake Elsbernd. “The one thing I think I have probably mentioned throughout this season, but will hit on again, is this group’s ability to learn from the coaching staff and then put that into their live competition. That may sound pretty simple, but it often takes kids a while to feel comfortable incorporating new things into their wrestling. We have tried to simplify what we do and just do those things really well. This group of kids have responded well to that, and we look forward to that continuing as we work through this season.”
Eight Warriors went 2-0 for the night including Aidan Feickert (106 pounds), Ethan Maldonado (138/132), Lukas Weiss (132/138), Kaden Bullerman (152/160), Parker Timp (160/170), Lane Quandahl (195/182), Tony Greve (220/195) and Ethan Timp (285).
South Winn will return to the mats after the holiday break Monday, Jan. 3, at Osage at 5 p.m.
