The 2021 cross country kicked off for the South Winn and Turkey Valley cross country teams Thursday night at Charles City.
The boys’ and girls’ teams raced in 9th-10th grade and 11th-12th grade divisions. Other teams participating were Clarksville, Crestwood, Mason City, Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler, Northwood-Kensett, Riceville, Rockford Senior and St. Ansgar, in addition to the host.
Upperclassmen leaders
In the girls’ junior/senior division, Turkey Valley’s Jalyssa Blazek broke the tape in 19:12.50, with Warrior junior Billie Wagner crossing the finish line second in 19:39.56. Rounding out the top three was South Winn’s Eryn Sabelka in 21:21.16. Also, medaling was South Winn’s Megan Hageman. The junior stopped the clock at 21:55.60, good for sixth place. Coming home eighth for the Trojans was Cambree Kruse in a time of 22:02.59. Anna Dietzenbach toured the course to a time of 22:55.25, taking 13th place. Hailey Elsbernd completed the 5K in 28:22.67 for TV, earning herself 38th place, while Quinn Kruckman rounded out the South Winn runners in 31:58.79 to take 50th place.
Racing in the boys’ upper division it was Isaiah Kruckman of South Winn claiming bronze in 17:35.66. Warrior junior Omar Flores sped around the course in 18:46.40, good for 16th place. A time of 19:19.09 earned SW senior Ethan Maldonado a 19th place finish. Dale Schwamman, the lone runner for TV in the upper division, finished 30th in 20:24.87. Also on the course for South Winn were Kyle Hageman, 36th, 20:40.99; Hunter Wagner, 38th, 20:48.99; Dayten Ondrashek, 45th, 21:35.08; Dawson Wenthold, 53rd, 22:12.15; and Chase Adam, 59th, 23:11.83.
Young standouts
Josie Tieskoetter had the best finish for the area teams in the girls’ freshmen/sophomore race. The SW sophomore completed the course in 22:34.49 in fourth place. Izzy Kuboushek (25:35.37), Josie Tollefsrud (25:36.74) and Aubrey Willey (25:36.81) completed the race together taking 23rd, 24th and 25th places, respectively. Others running for the Warriors were Kira Ellingson, 48th, 28:14.15 and Grace Zweibohmer, 49th 25:15.59.
Crossing the finish line in 30th place in the boys’ freshmen/sophomore competition was South Winn’s John Donovan, who notched a time of 22:43.77. TV’s Lucas Hanson traversed the 5K to a time of 22:51.42, earning himself 32nd place. Warrior Abe Conway posted a time of 25:26.38, good for 47th, while Luke Langreck of TV was 57th in 27:48.07. Completing the course in 26:53.36 for South Winn was Max Moonen in 59th place, while Bode Balk concluded his first race in 62nd place in a time of 30:21.84.
Coming up
Next up for both the Warriors and Trojans will be the All-American course Luther College Saturday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m.
