Going 5-3 in duals this week, the South Winn wrestling team now boasts a 17-6 dual mark for the 2021-22 season.
Celebrating seniors
The South Winn wrestling team had much to celebrate Thursday night as the Warriors recognized their senior wrestlers, cheerleaders and managers, as well as their parents for their support to the program over the years. SW also earned a trio of dual victories picking up a 72-4 win over Central Elkader, 72-12 over Clayton Ridge and defeating Riceville, 50-22.
Seven Warrior matmen went 3-0 during the quad including Xavier Williams (126 pounds), Chance Adam (145), Kaden Bullerman (152), Sam Conway (170), Lane Quandahl (182), Tony Greve (220/195), Logan Hageman (195/220).
“We completed our conference dual season with convincing wins over Central, Clayton Ridge and Riceville. It was senior night and it was fun to recognize a very strong senior class for us. We have a lot of kids in this group who have contributed to our program for the last four years and this group particularly has added a lot,” said Coach Jake Elsbernd.

Finding a tourney
The Warriors were left searching for a Saturday tournament after winter weather invaded much of Iowa Friday, and managed to jump into a dual meet at New Hampton.
“We had three very tough duals and came up short in all three, but it was great competition and our kids competed hard and got some good mat time in. All three schools we faced have strong wrestling programs and it was another good test for us as we get ready for the postseason run,” noted Coach Elsbernd.
Two grapplers went 3-0 for the Warriors during the day. At 220 pounds, senior Logan Hageman threw Adam Semple of Albert Lea in 1:45, then secured a 5-3 decision over Mason Allen of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. He also defeated Isaac Howe of New Hampton/Turkey Valley by a 10-7 decision at 195 pounds. Fellow senior Ethan Timp received a forfeit in the Albert Lea dual, then pinned Daniel Chavez of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, then finished the day with a 1-0 decision of Jacob Burgart of NH/TV.
