The Decorah cross country teams laced up their sneakers Thursday to compete at the Rich Engel Classic, held in Cedar Falls.
The varsity boys squad finished ninth overall with 258 points, with an average time of 18:21.9 and a spread of 41.2 seconds. Cedar Falls won their own meet with 54 points, posting an average time of 17:04.4 and a spread of 1:01.7.
Overall champion was Class 4A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Miles Wilson, in 15:51.7.
Decorah was led by junior Henry Weis. He toured the course in 17:56.4, good for 34th. In 49th was senior Cade Olson. His time of 18:21.1. Davis Coppola was one place back in a time of 18:21.6. Taking 60th in 18:32.5 was Jacob Magner. Landyn Hook concluded the team score in 65th with a time of 18:37.6.
Also running varsity were Reid Berns (71st, 18:45.0), Grant Zilka (77th, 18:49.4), Thomas Hammel (91st, 19:00.4) and Riley Berns (112th, 19:31.4)
“We were very mature in our race preparation and that was rewarded with really good race performances,” said Viking boys’ coach Brad Johansen.
In the girls’ competition, Decorah claimed 11th with 322 points. The varsity had an average time of 22:41.6, posting a spread of 1:49.6. Dubuque Hempstead took the women’s title, compiling 59 points, with average time of 20:11.1 and spread of 1:51.1.
Class 4A No. 17 Claire Helmers of Ames was the overall champion. She broke the tape in 19:02.2.
Decorah was led by freshman Ana Simon. She earned 44th place in 21:39.7. Lily Sandhorst toured the course in 22:33.9, good for 61st. Brynn Storhoff had a time of 22:50.8, good for 66th. In 68th, Elsa Johnson had a time of 22:54.3. Rounding out the team score was Natalie Stevens. The freshman posted a time of 23:29.3 to take 83rd. Also running varsity were Dani Losen (84th, 23:31.3), Decorah Hougen (86th, 23:32.6), Kamryn Steines (100th, 23:35.5), Grace Brynsaas (103rd, 23:45.2), Grace Blikre (107th, 23:53.5), Kathryn Kelly (121st, 24:24.4), Amelia Wadsworth (126th, 24:58.3) and Kenzie Riley (137th, 26:25.3).
Other results
The JV boys came in fifth overall with 123 points. They had an average time of 20:07.1, with a spread of 36.6 seconds. D’mitry Lesser was the first Viking to cross the finish line in 19:42.7, good for 17th.
The junior varsity girls garnered 146 points and placed seventh overall. The spread was 1:00.2, with an average time of 24:59.5. Leading the JV squad in 24:34.8 in 21st place was Elayna Hook.
