Then there was one left.
The South Winn and Turkey Valley boys’ golf teams roamed the Silver Spring Golf Course Friday with hopes of continuing their seasons, competing in sectional competition.
The top six teams were separated by 32 strokes as Starmont took the sectional title with 358 and Ed-Co was second with 363 to qualify for district play.
The Warriors fashioned a total of 359 to garner fourth place while Turkey Valley carded 390 total on the day, finishing sixth.
Medalist was South Winn’s Carson Wenthold (43-39) with an 82, and Garrett Waterhouse of Starmont was runner-up (44-42) with an 86.
Warrior proud
While Wenthold led South Winn and advanced individually, the Warrior senior Logan Baumler came through with a 95 (44-51) in 17th place. Brandon Frana carded rounds of 47 and 49 (96) in his final high school meet. Junior Shaun Klimesh also came through with a 96 (49-47). Others on the course for South Winn were Jordan Baumler (51-50-101) and Martin Horstman (56-47-103).
TV efforts
Trojan junior Garrett Kurtenbach (46-44-90) finished eighth overall, two strokes away from earning an individual district qualifying berth. A score of 88 was needed to advance.
Sophomore Calvin Bodensteiner fired identical rounds (47-47-94), while junior Jackson Vsetecka (49-50-99), and Caleb Kurtenbach (52-55-107) also counted for the Trojans. Senior dual sport star Kalvin Langreck tallied a 107 (55-52), while junior Brody Hackman went (60-51-111) to round out the Trojan scorecard.
“Garrett was obviously disappointed with his score. A pair of troublesome triple bogeys, one on the front nine and one on the back nine, cost him the chance to advance to district play,” said TV Coach John Reicks. “We only lose two seniors, Kalvin Langreck and Cael Wickham. Just like any sport, it is what you do in the off season that pays the biggest dividends. With the bulk of our roster slated to return and COVID hopefully behind us, next year promises to be another good year for Turkey Valley golf.”
District action
Wenthold will compete a districts Friday, May 21 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls at 10 a.m.
