Recent losses weren’t from the lack of effort by the South Winn girls’ basketball team (5-12, 4-8 UIC), it just wasn’t in the cards for the Warriors as they battled New Hampton and Kee.

Just short
Monday the Warriors hosted New Hampton (5-10) and came up short from picking up the non-conference win 59-50.
Down 37-22 at the half, South Winn won the second half, scoring 28 points but it wasn’t enough.
“We played extremely hard all night and battled back from a 22-point deficit. Overall we shot the ball really well shooting 51 percent from the floor,” said Coach Justin Izer.
Hitting nine shots outside the arc, junior Karissa Wenthold was one fire for 32 points. Alyssa Holthaus provided 10 points in the effort, while Allison Hageman put up five. Charlotte Moonen was there for two with one was Aubrey Willey.

Tough loss
On the road Tuesday night, South Winn battled through tired legs from the night before, falling to Kee (12-5, 11-3 UIC) 56-31.
Close in the first, the Warriors trailed 11-8 with the Hawks doing the damage in the second quarter. Kee outscored SW 24-4 to pull ahead 35-12 as the teams went to the locker rooms. That deficit was too large to overcome in the second half as Kee continued to pull away despite South Winn’s 19 second-half points.
“The girls played hard again but Kee is just a good basketball team. We had one of those nights on offense where we struggled to finish around the rim. Karissa came out hot again and Kee switched their defense to slow her down and it worked out for them,” noted Coach Izer.
Holthaus posted 10 points in the contest to lead the Warriors. A pair of threes gave Wenthold six points on the night while Willey added five. Hageman and Moonen dropped in four points apiece with Adele Conway rounding out the scoring with two.

Coming up
South Winn will host North Fayette Valley Friday, Jan. 26, at 6:15 p.m., coinciding with the Booster Club’s Annual Cake Silent Auction. Next week kicks off at home against Postville Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 6:15 p.m.
