Wildcats end 2022-23 season for Trojan girls

Try as they might, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team could not keep pace offensively with Maquoketa Valley Tuesday night in the Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinal, ending the Trojans’ season with a 61-38 loss in Jackson Junction.
The Trojans finish the season with 17-6 overall record and was second in the Upper Iowa Conference. The Wildcats (15-9) advance to the regional semifinal to face Edgewood-Colesburg (12-11) Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.

   The Trojans finish the season with 17-6 overall record and was second in the Upper Iowa Conference. The Wildcats (15-9) advance to the regional semifinal to face Edgewood-Colesburg (12-11) Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
   It was the first quarter that proved to be the difference maker Tuesday night. The teams combined to score 28 points; however, Maquoketa Valley led 17-11. Throughout the game, the Trojans led just once, 7-6, in the first quarter on an Alison Leibold bucket before the Wildcats finished the opening frame on a 11-4 run. Maquoketa Valley won the second quarter 15-7, making it 32-18 in favor of the Wildcats at the halftime break.
    A three-minute scoring drought in the third made it hard for the Trojans but they were able to cut into the Wildcats’ lead slight at 42-31 with eight minutes to play. In the final period Maquoketa Valley finished on a 11-3 run as the Trojan seniors left the court for the final time in a tearful goodbye to the sport.
   Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
   The Trojans will graduate four big contributors to the season including Aubrey Hoffert, Jacqlyn Schmitt, Alison Leibold and Brianna Busta.
