A second-half push in scoring forged the way for the South Winn boys’ basketball team (12-8, 8-7 UIC) to defeat the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (13-9, 8-8 UIC) Monday night 64-55 in Jackson Junction.
Winning the first match-up between the two squads, the Warriors wanted it to be no fluke as they plunged into the game with a fast pace and a 22-16 first quarter lead. Sophomore Matson Winings was on fire early, scoring 10 of the Warriors’ points in the opening eight minutes, including back-to-back threes.
South Winn pulled ahead by as many as seven in the early going of the second before Trojan senior Oliver Schmitt put up a pair of free throws and a trey of his own. A steal and open layup by Logan Busta knotted the score at 26-26 with 4:49 left to play in the half and a three by TV’s Braylen Byrne gave the Trojans their first lead of the game 29-28 at the 4:08 mark. The Warriors bounced back to keep the game close, trailing 34-32 at halftime.
Returning to the hardwood, Turkey Valley’s Caleb Kurtenbach quickly put up a trey to give the Trojans a five-point lead. That advantage soon evaporated at the hands of Winings as the Warriors put up five quick points. With the lead bouncing back-and-forth it was the 2:56 mark of the third quarter when the Trojans fell behind for good. On top 51-48 to start the final period, South Winn’s defense gave up just seven points which included five Trojan free throws and a Schmitt basket.

For the Warriors
Winings led the way for South Winn with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Kole Hageman put up 20 points and nabbed nine boards. Providing nine rebounds to go with his six points was Kaden Barton-Franzen.

Trojan highlights
Schmitt led the Trojans with 22 points. Kurtenbach scored 13 points while Logan Busta provided eight.
