Stille for third
It was quite a showing for Stille in Des Moines as he returned to Decorah with some hardware. The junior opened the state tournament with a fall over Max Gast of Osage in 3:42 Thursday morning. Battling for control throughout Friday’s quarterfinal, the Viking eventually fell victim to No. 2 Eric Kinkald of Camanche in 4:57. And back to work he went. Working his way toward the medal stand, Stille picked up a 12-3 major decision over Albia’s Justin Keller, who was ranked 10th, in the second round of consolation matches Friday, then defeated Joshua Zeman of West Liberty by another major decision of 10-2.
Stille had two more matches to win before claiming the bronze, besting Clarinda’s Kale Downey by an 8-5 decision in the consolation semifinals and ultimately securing an 8-6 decision over No. 6 Hunter Steffans of Sergeant Bluff-Luton on the third place match. Stille concluded his season with a 36-12 record.
Decorah’s Austin Wilkins also made an appearance at the state meet at 160 pounds, falling in his first match in 4:53 to No. 7 Samuel West of Notre Dame (Burlington), then giving up a 3-0 decision to No. 10 Kam Royster of Williamsburg in the first round of consolation matches. The season ended with a 28-17 record for Wilkins.

Hageman on the podium
It was a good week in Des Moines for the South Winn senior duo of Logan Hageman and Tony Greve as they were able to have the experience of a lifetime as they wrestled in the Iowa State High School Wrestling Tournament.
In the Thursday night’s first round, both Hageman and Greve dropped their matches to move into the consolation bracket. After falling to No. 8 Kolben Miller of North Butler-Clarksville, Hageman battled back on the backside to defeat Lisbon’s Indy Ferguson by a 5-1 decision to stay alive in the tournament.
Hageman fought through a pair of tie-breakers Friday to earn his way onto the podium. In the consolation round two match, the SW senior held on for a 3-2 ultimate tie-breaker win over No. 9 Ronan Poyton of Iowa City Regina. He then survived for a 2-1 tie-breaker win over Underwood’s Carter Davis., who was ranked No. 6. Moving into the consolation semifinal, Hageman was thrown in 2:00 by No. 4 Brodie Anderson of Manson-Northwest Webster. Battling for fifth, the grappler squared off with Beckman’s Owen Huehnergarth, getting thrown in 4:40 by the No. 5 opponent to finish 27-8 for the season.
“Logan was able to put together two wins to place him on the awards stand. Both wins came in the overtime periods and displayed how tough of a kid Logan truly is. To finish this season at 6th place is a remarkable feat and battling through his knee injury is a great example of how to overcome adversity to accomplish your goals. On Saturday Logan dropped a couple of tough matches but that doesn’t take away from the great tournament run that he had,” said Coach Jake Elsbernd.
In the opening round, No. 12 Greve was turned in 3:09 by Cooper Nielson of Audubon to fall into the consolation bracket but battle back in the consolation to pin No. 8 Brady Davis of Maquoketa Valley in 1:58. Greve’s quest for medal ended for in round two of the consolations when the senior fell in 3:26 to Panorama’s No. 5 Cooper Andersen. Greve concluded his senior campaign with a 36-9 record.
“Friday was a new day and with that was new challenges. Tony Greve got beat for the second time and was eliminated from the tournament. Tony put together a great season and wrestled hard. This was a great opportunity for him to compete with the best kids in the state of Iowa,” said Coach Elsbernd. “We are very proud of these two young men and the careers they had and the way they finished off this senior season. Thanks to everyone who has supported this team again this season. The kids and this coaching staff really appreciate everyone!”

Herold finishes seventh
After suffering several concussions earlier in the season, Turkey Valley’s Marcus Herold may have been overlooked with his record. Although the senior lost in the opening round by tech fall to No. 9 Gavin Bridgewater of South Tama Thursday morning, he battled back for a 7-2 decision over Reece Wrage of North Polk in the consolations. Herold then pinned Tyler Binning of Clarke/Osceola/Murray in 1:51 in the consolation second round before dropping a 7-2 decision to Mount Vernon’s topped-rank Clark Younggreen in the third round before squaring off with No. 7 Ty Hulshof of Sioux Center for seventh, winning by a 12-3 major decision and posting a 9-3 record for the season.
