Young’s field goals lift Vikes over Western Dubuque

By Becky Walz,

Looking to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot, the Decorah football team (4-2, 2-0) took care of business to defeat Western Dubuque (3-3, 1-1) on the road Friday night.
A pair of first half touchdowns combined with a pair of second half field goals lifted the Vikings over the Bobcats, 19-14.

How it went
Neither team had the opportunity to score in the first quarter and it was Western Dubuque who scored first in the second period on a 23-yard run that culminated after a 15-play drive. A 64-yard kick-off return by Zach Jermier put the Vikings on the Bobcat 16-yard line. Two plays later, Keenan Tyler connected with Joseph Bockman on a 13-yard pass. A PAT by Brody Young knotted the score at 7-7. Decorah’s second TD took a little longer as the Vikes started on their own 10-yard line and took 11 plays.
Decorah added to its lead in the third quarter when Young connected on a 34-yard field goal with another in the fourth period from 32 yards. The Bobcats put together a solid drive in the fourth to score on a 5-yard breakaway run, but it wasn’t enough to take over the lead.
