Spectrum says new bus vital to providing services – Nonprofit in need of $45K for purchase

The Spectrum Network’s bus is invaluable to its clients. The nonprofit provides services to adults with developmental disabilities and, without a bus, Spectrum Operations Manager Christopher Miculinich said the people Spectrum serves would suffer.

“If we couldn’t buy a replacement ADA-compliant van/bus, it would significantly impact our ability to serve individuals with disabilities,” he said. “Many of our clients rely on this transportation to access essential services and community activities. Without it, they could face isolation, reduced independence and fewer opportunities for personal growth and engagement. This setback would not only limit their participation in our programs but also undermine our mission to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all members of our community.”

Spectrum’s current bus, a 1992 Ford Cutaway Van with 70,688 miles on it, isn’t operational, and the local non-profit hasn’t been able to keep up with the repairs the vehicle has required.

“Frequent breakdowns and maintenance issues are not only costly but also disrupt our ability to provide consistent transportation for our clients,” Miculinich said. “The van’s age and mileage mean that it no longer meets the safety and accessibility standards required for our day habilitation services.”

Spectrum uses the vehicle for day habilitation services, which are programs that help people with disabilities develop and improve their skills, independence and social connections. Miculinich said the bus also helps Spectrum provide essential transportation for individuals to access community-based activities and social engagement opportunities.

Miculinich said Spectrum has raised $25,000 of the $70,000 it needs to buy a new van or bus, and he said the vehicle is priced high for a good reason.

“While this might seem like a significant amount, it is standard for this type of specialized vehicle,” he said. “The cost reflects the necessary features, such as wheelchair accessibility, safety systems and durability, which are essential for providing reliable transportation to individuals with disabilities. Investing in such a vehicle ensures that our clients have safe, comfortable, and inclusive access to our services. Given the impact it will have on our community, we believe it’s a necessary and worthwhile investment.”

Miculinich also said Spectrum couldn’t provide its essential services to disabled adults without the community’s support.

“We are so thankful for our supporters,” he said. “They make such a huge difference in our clients’ lives. However, we do need continued help to reach our goal of purchasing the new ADA-compliant van or bus. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to ensuring that individuals we serve have the mobility and independence they deserve. Your support is truly life-changing and makes a difference for those we serve.”
