Area athletes run through rain and mud in All-American Saturday

It was far from the perfect day for a cross country meet Saturday as Luther College played host to the All-American cross country meet. The event featured teams from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, competing in middle school, junior varsity, varsity and collegiate courses. Locally, Decorah, South Winn and Turkey Valley all competed.

Decorah talents
   The Decorah squads endured the rain to finish 12th in the varsity boys’ race, while the girls finished 24th overall. 
   The Viking boys tallied 329 points and had a spread of 56 seconds. With 56 points it was Minneapolis Washburn claiming the team title. Onalaska sophomore Manny Putz blazed the 5K course in 15:46.88 to be crowned the overall champion.
   Leading the boys to the finish line by Henry Weis in 43rd with a time of 18:01.19. Grant Zilka toured the muddy course in 18:22.07, good for 59th place. Coming in on Zilka’s heels was Davis Coppola in 18:22.24 to take 60th. In 18:44.68, Cade Olson took 78th place with Thomas Hammel rounding out the team score in 89th with a time of 18:57.46. Other varsity harriers on the course were Jake Magner (106th, 19:25.82) and D’mitry Lesser (157th, 20:28.07).
   “A full one-third of the team ran lifetime best on a rainy, muddy course,” said Decorah boys’ coach Brad Johansen. 
   In the girls’ race it was Dubuque Hempstead coming out on top of the team standings with 55 points. Decorah had 562 points with a spread of 1:20.
   Freshman Anna Simon paced the Lady Vikings as the first to finish for the squad in 22:09.90 to take 88th place overall. Lily Sandhorst crossed the finish line in 22:33.58, good for 105th, while Natalie Stevens posted a time of 22:43.78 to earn 112th place. In 23:05.11, Brynn Storhoff toured the course to take 127th place. Annalise Skrade capped off the scoring in 139th place with a time of 23:29.93. Elsa Johnson (143rd, 23:35.39) and Kamryn Steines (175th, 24:47.99) also raced for Decorah.

South Winn stars
   The South Winn varsity girls finished the day with 520 points to take 18th place, while there were no boys on the course for the varsity race. The Lady Warriors had a spread of 6:09.
   Racing to the finish line first for the Lady Warriors was senior Billie Wagner. She stopped the clock at 20:02.98 to take 14th place. Josie Tieskoetter traversed the wet course in 22:04.93 to bring home 81st place while Megan Hageman clocked in at 22:19.26 to take 98th place. In 23:31.30 it was Anna Dietzenbach taking 140th place with Karissa Wenthold rounded out the scoring in 201st place. She had a time of 26:12.70. Ella Willey also ran, finishing in 26:22.74, good for 203rd place.
   The JV boys’ team finished 11th overall with 310 points and a spread of 51 seconds. Comprising the boys’ score was John Donovan (56th, 19:59.80), Bo Wangsness (73rd, 20:17.07), Abe Conway (79th, 20:22.60), Hunter Wagner (87th, 20:27.94) and Dawson Wenthold (106th, 20:51.59). 

Trojan athletes
   Turkey Valley had three harriers compete in the rain and mud including Russell Nieman in the boys’ varsity event where the junior finished in 18:58.87, good for 90th place. Bode Balk finished the course in 22:43.50, good for 202nd in the junior varsity event.
   Representing the girls, Morgan Wenthold completed the course in 26:04.26, good for 131st in the junior varsity race.
