Area athletes shine bright at SW Invite

Wrapping up the regular season, teams from northeast Iowa invaded Calmar Monday to compete in the South Winn Invite.
The hosts Warrior boys won the team title with 148 points over Charles City. The Decorah junior varsity took third with 111 points. With only handful of competitors, Turkey Valley tallied 40 points to take sixth.
It was Crestwood winning the girls’ title with 154 points over Charles City who had 121. South Winn claimed third with 114 with Decorah taking home fifth with 47 points followed by the Lady Trojans with 38.

Golden Warriors
In addition to the team title, the Warrior boys came away with six gold medal events.
South Winn won two of the four field events with Gavin Feickert leaping 17 feet, 9.5 inches in the long jump to best the field and Parker Timp send the shot put 44 feet, 6 inches.
Junior Lukas Weiss was the only other individual winner, breaking the tape in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.35 seconds.
Three relays were the best as well. Weiss and Timp paired up with Kaden Barton-Franzen and Brady Ohrt in the shuttle hurdle relay, winning in 1:06.39. In the distance medley, Landon Livingood, Landen Schnuelle, Abe Conway and Brad Dahl was the first quartet to stop the clock at 4:04.04. The night finished with the 4×400 relay title in 3:51.18. Members of the winning squad were Brennan Franzen, Brody Tieskoetter, Livingood and Conway.
For the girls it was six gold medals as well. Abby Wagner cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet even and was second in the long jump. In the shortest sprint of the night, Cloey Zweibohmer raced 100-meters to gold in 13.20 seconds. In 1:06.28 it was Addy Conway besting the 400-meter dash field.
The 4×100, 4×200 and 4×800 relays also finished at the top of the field. On the track first were Izzy Kuboushek, Karissa Wenthold, Ava Franzen and Annie Hageman taking gold in the 4×800 with a time of 10:55.57. Then it was the 4×200 relay’s turn to show their stuff, winning in 1:54.54. Members of the gold quartet were Katie Shimek, Maddy Jansen, Allison Hageman and Zweibohmer. Near the end of the night, the 4×100 stopped the clock at 53.58 seconds with Shimek, Josie Tollefsrud, Al. Hageman and Zweibohmer.

Trojans at the top
A pair of Trojan boys’ events rose to the top including freshman Jayden Rausch winning the 3200-meter in 11:49.89. The 4×800 of Russell Nieman, Burke Busta, Hugo Busta and JD Kruse were golden as well in 9:23.58.
Picking up a silver in the distance medley relay were Kruse, B. Busta, Schmidt and Nieman. The quartet posted a time of 4:06.68. The 4×400 relay of Kaden Schmidt, B. Busta, H. Busta and Kruse grabbed runner-up to finish the night in 3:52.48.
A couple of freshman girls highlighted the night for Turkey Valley with Hazel Nieman taking silver in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles. In the dash, Nieman clocked in at 1:08.67 and crossed the finish line in 1:18.06 in the hurdle event. In the 3000-meter run it was Bella Stika taking runner-up in 12:49.61.

Decorah bests
For Decorah the boys found success in a trio of events. Individually it was Clarence Nimrod winning gold in the 1600-meter run in 5:13.11, while Ashton Saltou broke the tape in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.08. The 4×200 relay also finished first in 1:40.43. Members of the winning relay were Grant Remington, Tanner Caddell, Kade O’Hara and Dakota VanGundy.
Annika Schmelzer was a silver medalist for the Viking girls in the discus, sending the weight 108 feet, 2 inches. Teammate Annaleissa Arnold was third with a throw of 105 feet, 6 inches. Adding to the field event success was a bronze for Lauren Luzum in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 7 inches. The 4×800 relay of Deborah Hougen, Olivia Rissman, Rachel Spilde-Maki and Jillian Volz took silver in 12:02.31.
The 4×200 relay took bronze to round out the top three finishes for the Decorah girls. In 1:59.97, it was Hadley Alexander, Natalie Goodner, Jayden Lundvedt and Schmelzer.
