While temps soared earlier last week, athletes and fans endured cooler, damp weather at the Decorah Invite Thursday night. The Vikes welcomed six other squads, including South Winn, Turkey Valley and Waukon.
In the team race, Decorah took care of business, winning with 160.50 points. The Trojans put up 60, good for fifth, while South Winn took sixth with 45 points.
Golds for DHS
It was five gold medals for the Vikes. In the long jump, Hayley Stowe bested the field with a leap of 15 feet 10.25 inches. Isabella Knutson also won an individual title in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.34 seconds, as well as gold as a member of shuttle hurdle relay team. Joining Knutson were Lani Hubka, Kallie Mincks and Anya Lovstuen to post a time of 1:11.34.
Stowe picked up her second gold of the night when she combined with Brielle Buresh, Dahlyn Heading and Sydney Kipp in the 4×100 relay. Their time was 52.88 seconds. Hubka picked up her second medal of the night as a member of the winning 4×200 relay. Joining her were Brinley Krivachek, Sami Mount and Kailyn O’Gara for a winning time of 1:49.69.
Wrapping up the night with runner-up finishes for the Vikes were Chloe Reiser in the shot put (36’9”), O’Gara in the 100-meter dash (13.64), B. Buresh in the 200-meter dash (28.32), Lovstuen in the 100-meter hurdles (17.69), the 4×400 relay (4.17.54), 4×800 relay (10:35.36) and distance medley (4:41.46).
TV and SW high marks
Turkey Valley had two events take gold. Jalyssa Blazek sprinted to victory in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.56 after anchoring the 4×800 to a victory. Joining the junior in the relay were Josie Weber, Jaycie Byrne and Cambree Kruse in a time of 10:34.95.
The Trojans had two relays cross the finish line second, including the opening sprint medley and the later 4×200 relay. Combining for a time of 1:59.39 in the sprint medley were Kara Reicks, Clare Courtney, J. Weber and Blazek. The 4×200 quartet of J. Weber, Olivia Snyder, Kruse and Byrne completed the race in 1:58.85.
South Winn’s Billie Wagner was the lone champion for the Warriors. She took the 3000-meter race in 11:35.15. Emmaleigh Ohrt sent the discus 100 feet 10 inches to grab silver, while Eryn Sabelka was the 400-meter dash runner-up in 1:03.48.
Double gold for Headington
Waukon’s Annika Headington won both the throwing events Thursday night. The senior sailed the discus 108 feet 9 inches after winning the shot put with a throw of 39 feet 10.5 inches.
Madelyn Helgerson couldn’t catch 3000-meter leader Billie Wagner of South Winn, ending her race as the runner-up in 12:30.09. It was a second-place leap of 15 feet 10 inches for Kaitlyn Krambeer in the long jump to earn her silver medal.
Four events ended the day with bronze medals including Cameron Johnson in the high jump (4’8”), Jayden Knox in the 800-meter (2:35.10), Brecken Stewart in the 400-meter hurdles (1:18.74) and shuttle hurdle relay (1:17.60)
