By Becky Walz,
Once again the Decorah track and field teams dominated at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, this time at Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday.
The girls picked up their 17th NEIC crown in a row. Winning nine events and taking second in five, Decorah racked up 160.50 points, while New Hampton finished second with 142.
The boys won their sixth title in a row by scoring 162 points, edging out Waverly-Shell Rock who garnered 158.50 points. The Vikings won nine of the 19 events on the way to the victory.
“Wow – what a battle for the NEIC crown! We are very proud of the competitive effort put forth by our athletes. We were able to score in 18-of-19 events and were able to get double up points in six of those events. That always gives you a fighting chance to win a conference championship,” said Decorah’s boys’ coach Joel Rollinger.
Impressive performances
Overall, the Viking girls won five individual and four relay titles.
In the field events it was Chloe Reiser on top of the podium in the shot put and Julia Alberts in the discus. Reiser propelled the weight 38 feet 2 inches. Alberts claimed her second straight discus title with a throw of 119 feet 2 inches.
Decorah dominated the sprint events as Brielle Buresh broke the 100-meter dash tape in 12.95 seconds. Lani Hubka was a two-time winner, besting the 200-meter dash field in 26.50 and 400-meter dash race in 1:00.46.
The shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Kallie Mincks, Sydney Kipp, Autumn Schaller and Anya Lovstuen came home first in 1:10.81. In the 4×200 it was Brinley Krivachek, Hayley Stowe, Kailyn O’Gara and Buresh winning in 1:48.65.
It was Krivachek, Stowe, O’Gara and Buresh putting together the 4×100 winning time of 50.41 seconds. The night ended with yet another relay gold in the 4×400. With a time of 4:10.75 were Hubka, McKenzie Riley, Sami Mount and Lily Sandhorst.
Another win
For the second year in a row, Joseph Hjelle swept the throwing event titles. The senior sent the discus sailing 153 feet, 0.5 inch for the title and launched the shot put 53 feet 8 inches.
After setting a new 100-meter dash school record Monday, Haywood Stowe blazed his way to the top in the sprint at the NEIC meet and added the 200-meter dash title to his day. Stowe broke the tape in the shorter race in 11.18 seconds and doubled that time in the 200-meter dash at 22.36 seconds.
Jacob Pipho was the champion in the 400-meter hurdles, stopping the clock at 56.80 seconds.
Four relays were victorious. The quartet of Hogan Smith, Cade Olson, Thomas Hammell and Bennett Schutte easily got the 4×800 relay in 8:25.74. Austin Wilkins, Dakota Johnson, Gavin Groux and Pipho combined their talents in the shuttle hurdle relay for gold in 1:03.64.
Later it was Addae Whitsitt, Ben Wymer, Groux and Kelley Gates teaming up in the 4×200 in 1:34.08 for the top spot. Near the end of the night the 4×100 posted a winning time of 43.75 seconds, breaking the school record. Members of the gold-medal relay were Whitsitt, Wymer, Hjelle and Stowe.
