The Decorah swim and dive team opened the 2024 season last week with a pair of meets in three days with many new faces in the pool looking to contribute.
“We swam well against some very strong competition. We are a young team and that creates a lot of opportunities to get better each meet. We had two meets in less than 48 hours, I am impressed with how hard we competed on tired bodies – progress, not perfection,” said Coach Loran Storts.

Opening at home
It was a busy night at the Luther College Natatorium as the Vikings hosted a double dual with Waterloo and Mason City. Decorah defeated Mason City 101 to 80 and fell to Waterloo 106 to 77.
Liz Bucksa was the big winner of the night in the pool, winning a pair of individual races and teaming up for a relay win. In the 50 free, the sophomore touched the wall a second faster than teammate Bella Sailor in 26.02 seconds. After winning the shortest race of the night, Bucksa went on to win the longest as she finished the 500 free in 5:48.21. She also anchored the 200 free relay to a gold. In 1:51.69, Sailor, Avalea Burns, Grace Baker and Bucksa won by more than three seconds. The Viking also led off the runner-up finishing 200 medley relay. Bucksa joined her talents with Burns, Sailor and Jenna Schissel for silver in 2:00.01.
In addition to finishing silver in the 50 free individual, Sailor was the runner-up in the 100 fly as she stopped the clock at 1:06.58. Schissel, a freshman, took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:27.76 and the 100 breast in 1:16.09.
