By Becky Walz,
Doing battle with Crestwood, the Decorah football team (0-1) had its hands full Friday night, falling to the Cadets. 26-14, at home.
Tale of the game
It was all about Cole Butikofer from Crestwood. He had 136 yards rushing and complete 3-of-7 passes for 38 yards.
After being forced to punt on the opening possession, Decorah was able to hold the visitors to just one score in the first quarter on a Cadet possession that went 60 yards in 15 plays.
Looking to pick up some momentum, the Vikes began to march down the field when Crestwood intercepted a pass early in the second period. After eight plays, the Cadets were once again in the end zone and held a 14-0 advantage. Then Decorah’s offense came to life when Brady Stille broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown run two plays into their next possession. However, the visitors still had plenty of go as they scored with time running off the clock to lead 20-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Kasey Krauskopf once again ignited the crowd with an early interception and 36-yard return which set up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Stille to Kaiden Quandahl, narrowing the Viking deficit to 20-14. It was later in that same period that Crestwood’s Butikofer would score his fourth touchdown of the game from five yards out to seal the deal.
A numbers game
Decorah had 170 yards on the ground and 100 passing, while the Cadets busted loose for 272 rushing yards and passed for 38.
