By Becky Walz,

It was back-to-back home conference games for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (9-3, 6-1 NEIC) late last week as the boys went 1-1 with Crestwood and New Hampton visiting the Vikings.

Make-up game

Although the Vikings played well as a team, it didn’t translate into a win, as Decorah fell to Crestwood (4-3, 3-2 NEIC) at home, 69-51, Thursday night in a game originally scheduled for earlier this month.

Decorah found the hoop in the first quarter; however, the Cadets’ shots were on more on target as the Vikings fell behind 16-9. The second quarter saw Decorah have an offensive surge, scoring 15 points, leaving the margin 33-24 at halftime. Crestwood continued to find the basket regularly, outscoring the Vikes 36-27 in the second half.

Five Vikes put points on the board with Charlie Robinson having the hot hand for 16 points and 14 rebounds. Fellow senior Briggs Duwe downed 14, while Jacob Pipho drained 12. Providing five points was Joe Bockman, followed by Mason O’Hara with four.

Home again

The Vikings made up for a slow start versus New Hampton (3-9, 0-6 NEIC) to come away with the 53-44 victory on their home court Friday night.

Both NEIC squads raced up and down the court without scoring a point in the first three minutes of the contest. NH was the first to put the ball through the net and claimed the 10-8 lead after the opening period. Decorah came alive in the second quarter, outscoring the Chickasaws to lead 27-20 going into the locker room. The advantage was enough to hold in the second half, despite NH’s best efforts.

Jacob Pipho had the hot hand. He scored 16 points to lead the way to go with five rebounds. Briggs Duwe was in double figures with 13 points, along with nine boards and three assists. Mason O’Hara and Trey McCain chipped in six points apiece. Carson Wemark led the Vikes under the basket with 11 boards and three steals.
