Grateful.
After having five meets canceled due to weather conditions this season, the Decorah boys’ track and field team were grateful to be able to compete Tuesday night in Mason City, after Monday’s conditions were less than favorable.
“Mason City was able to secure enough workers to move the meet to Tuesday and we really needed a chance to compete,” noted Coach Joel Rollinger. “We were very pleased with the efforts of the team.”
The Vikes finished second with 140 points to Mason City who had 176 points.
Despite the still less than ideal weather, the Vikings pulled out five gold medals.
Haywood Stowe spring to the title in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. In the shorter race, Stowe crossed the finish line in 12.30 seconds and posted a time of 23.03 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Joseph Hjelle had the top throw in the shot put with a heave of 48 feet 1 inch.
Addae Whitsitt, Ben Wymer, Hjelle and Stowe sprinted home in the 4×100 in 44.64 seconds.
In the 4×800, Bennett Schutte, Cade Olson, Trey McCain and Hogan Smith won the event in 8:33.08.
The Vikes will split their team Monday, May 2, with the varsity going to MFL MarMac and the junior varsity to South Winn. The Northeast Iowa Conference meet is Thursday, May 5, at Waverly-Shell Rock at 5 p.m.
