Decorah harriers closing in on season end

The Decorah boys’ and girls’ cross country teams made the most of the seasonal weather Thursday, competing at the Western Dubuque Invite.
The boys, ranked 11th in Class 3A, finished third with 95 points, while the Viking girls finished sixth with 136 points. Class 3A No. 4 Western Dubuque (Epworth) swept both the girls’ and boys’ varsity titles.

A day for the boys
The varsity boys raced to a great finish with an average time of 18:15 and a spread of 50 seconds.
The boys’ varsity champion was Class 3A No. 2 Eli Naumann, a senior from Western Dubuque. He broke the tape in 15:58, with a mile pace of 5:08.
Arlo Hayes earned seventh overall in 17:45. He had a mile average time of 5:43.
Senior Bennett Schutte blazed the trails to 20th overall. He had a time of 18:14, with an average of 5:52. Just on his heels, Izaak Eichinger clocked in at 18:18, earning 22nd. His average time was 5:53.
Cade Olson and Larsson Shockey completed the team score. Olson place 24th in 18:22, with a mile average of 5:55. Shockey had an average of 5:59, earning 26th. His time was 18:35.
Also running varsity were Jake Magner, 27th, 18:38; Henry Weis, 28th, 18:39; Davis Coppola, 32nd, 18:52; Landan Folkedahl, 33rd, 18:52; and Grant Zilka, 34th, 18:52.
“Many guys had their season’s best run on a very challenging course,” said Vikings boys’ coach Brad Johansen. “JV was remarkably focused and ran exceptionally well.”
The junior varsity took the top spot with 29 points, claiming four harriers in the top 10. The JV Vikes had an average time of 19:35 and spread of 57 seconds.
Contributing to the win was Adrian Huang, second, 19:07; Thomas Hammel, third, 19:08; Landyn Hook, sixth, 19:47; D’Mitry Lesser, seventh, 19:47; Max Wilson, 11th, 20:04; Haywood Stowe, 13th, 20:11; and Benson Newhouse, 17th, 20:22.

The girls battle through
The Vikings girls posted an average time of 22:42, with a spread of 1:11.
The individual champion was Calamus-Wheatland freshman Noelle Steines who ranked No. 1 in Class 1A. She posted a time of 18:47 with a mile pace of 6:03.
Sophomore Danielle Losen toured the course in 22:06, finishing 23rd. Her mile pace was 7:07. Annalise Skrade was next to cross the finish line. Her 7:10 mile pace had her finishing 24th in a total time of 22:16. Taking to the trail, Brynn Storhoff stopped the clock 28th in 22:44. Her average mile was 7:19.
Abby Halverson came in 32nd overall with a time of 23:06. The senior had a mile average of 7:26. Rounding out the seven Vikings were Madison Tollefson, Brielle Buresh and Elsa Johnson. Tollefson posted a mile average of 7:30 and finished 37th in 23:17, while Buresh tallied a time of 23:26 to earn 40th with a 7:33 mile average. Johson, a freshman, ran a 7:39 average mile and tallied 23:47, good for 43rd place.
Others on the course for Decorah were McKenzie Riley, 44th, 23:55; Lily Sandhorst, 47th, 24:20; and Kathryn Kelly, 53rd, 24:55
“I am proud of the efforts of our team. They keep battling and improving,” said Viking girls’ cross country coach Cristy Nimrod.
JV had a perfect score of 15, average time of 23:19 and spread of 1:04.
Earning that perfect score for the Vikings were Grace Brynsaas, first, 22:50; Kamryn Steines, second, 23:02; Grace Neal, third, 23:11; Natalie Goodner, fourth, 23:38; and Grace Blikre, fifth, 23:54.

Regular season finale
The Vikings will have their final regular season competition tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 5) as they run the rolling hills of the South Winn Golf and Country Club in Calmar at 4:30 p.m.
