By Becky Walz,
Cool temperatures and winds couldn’t stop the Decorah early bird track meet Monday night as six area teams got the outdoor season underway.
The host Vikings finished second with 119 points. South Winn came in sixth with 27 points.
In total, the two teams combined for seven gold medals.
Six for the Vikes
Decorah claimed six gold medals Monday, with three coming in field events.
First up was Joseph Hjelle who won both the shot put and discus competitions. In the shot put, the senior flung the weight 49 feet 6.5 inches. With an impressive throw of 148 feet 8 inches, Hjelle won the discus, ahead of teammate Fisher Tweten who had a throw of 124 feet 7 inches. Kaiden Quandahl surpassed the high jump field as he cleared the bar at 5 feet 10 inches.
Individually in the running events, Haywood Stowe broke the tape in the 100-meter dash in 11.26 seconds.
Two relays also stood above the rest of the field as the sprint medley started the night with a gold in 1:38.78. Members of the winning quartet included Austin Wilkins, Ben Wymer, Stowe and Bennett Schutte. Near the end of the night, it was B. Wymer, Hjelle, Jacob Pipho and Stowe teaming up in the 4×100 relay for gold. They had a winning time of 44.46 seconds.
