It was one for the record books Thursday as the Decorah girls’ and boys’ track and field teams not only hosted, but won, the Northeast Iowa Conference meet.
The top four girls’ teams were separated by just 24 points as the Vikings took their 16th consecutive title with 128 points. New Hampton finished second with 116, while Charles City rounded out the top-three with 110.
The Decorah boys ran away with 179 to win their fifth straight conference title, ahead of Waverly-Shell Rock (136) and Charles City (99).

When the last race was completed, the Decorah girls finished with seven golds, which propelled the Vikings to the top of the standings.
“Championships are earned not given — girls earned the conference title,” said co-coaches Cristy Nimrod and Brad Johansen. “We want to take this time to thank our parents, faculty, administration and community for their support all season!”
Taking three titles for Decorah was Lani Hubka, as she won both the 100-meter (12.93) and 200-meter (26.89) events and anchored the 4×100 relay to victory in 50.90 seconds. Combining with Hubka on the 4×100 team were Fiona Buresh, Bella Knutson and Kailyn O’Gara. Knutson added two other titles to her evening, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 15.72 seconds and anchoring the shuttle hurdle to victory. Joining forces in the shuttle hurdle were Autumn Schaller, Anya Lovstuen and Leslie Campbell for a time of 1:09.27.
Julia Alberts was the other individual champion of the evening for Decorah, winning the discus in 112 feet 3 inches. Teaming up in the 4×400 relay for the win were Sami Mount, Brielle Buresh, Abby Halverson and Kallie Mincks. The foursome posted a time of 4:15.21 for the win.
Stowe wins four
Vikings were crowned conference champs in 11 of 19 events Thursday, saw the school record in the 4×100 fall and numerous runners set season personal best performances.
“Wow! What a conference meet for the Decorah Vikings. The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of entire team effort on Thursday night. To have 11 of 19 events be crowned conference champion was an amazing accomplishment. We hope to continue doing great over the next couple of weeks. I would also like to thank all of the wonderful meet workers for another outstanding job. Their service is very much appreciated by the coaching staff,” said Coach Joel Rollinger.
It was a golden night for Haywood Stowe who swept the sprint titles. Stowe blazed down the track in the 100-meter dash in 11.15 seconds and later added the 200-meter dash title to his night in 22.98 seconds. The junior also anchored the 4×100 and 4×200 relays to victory. Joining Stowe in the 4×100 were Addae Whitsitt, Cael Luzum and Drew Snyder in a time of 44.26 seconds. In the 4×200 it was Whitsitt, Jacob Pipho and Snyder combining with Stowe to break the tape in 1:32.24.
Senior Brady Hogan was the long-distance champion. Hogan won both the 1600-meter run (4:41.27), 3200-meter run (10:15.50) and anchored the distance medley to gold. Combining with Hogan in the relay for a time of 3:45.22, were Ben Wymer, Nick Einck and Luzum. In the 4×800 relay, Bennett Schutte, Trey McCain, August Witt and Brayden Hartl produced the fastest time in 8:43.11. It took 1:03.25, for the shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Austin Wilkins, Briggs Duwe, Dakota Johnson and Pipho to cross the finish line in first.
In the field events it was Joseph Hjelle winning both the discus (145’6”) and shot put (50’10”).
Waukon’s best
The Waukon girls took home two individual gold medals. Kaitlyn Krambeer won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 4.5 inches. Annika Headington was victorious in the shot put with a distance of 41 feet 10.5 inches.
Braxton Stewart broke the tape for the Indians in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.60 seconds.
State-qualifying
The state qualifying meet is Thursday, May 13, beginning at 4 p.m. Decorah is in Class 3A and will participate at Independence.
Waukon is in Class 2A and will compete at Jesup Thursday, May 13 at 4 p.m.
