The Decorah cross country teams began the season Tuesday, competing in the annual Oelwein Invitational at Hickory Grove Golf Course.
The Viking boys, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, placed first with 56 points. Center Point-Urbana was a distant second with 76 points. The Decorah girls also had a good first meet, finishing fifth with 150 points. Denver took the title with 38 points. Both JV squads took the titles as well.
Great for the boys
Running on the 5K course, Decorah posted an average time of 18:48, with a spread of 1:31.10.
Individual champion was Eli Larson of Center Point-Urbana. He broke the tape in 16:59.67.
Senior Arlo Hayes had the best finish for Decorah in fifth place, crossing the line in 18:04.94. Posting a time of 18:33.19, Izaak Eichinger placed sixth. Henry Weis, a sophomore, also maneuvered into the top 10, finishing eighth in a time of 18:38.11. Larsson Shockey toured the course in 19:02.91, good for 13th, while Jacob Magner completed Decorah’s team score. The junior placed 24th in 19:31.01. Also running for the Vikes was Landan Folkedahl. The senior was 39th in 20:18.83.
In the JV race, the Vikings posted a score of 22 with an average time of 20:03 and spread of 1:43.40.
Senior Bennett Schutte was the individual champion. He broke the tape in 19:09.46. Cade Olson took the runner-up spot with a time of 19:48.97.
Contributing to the team score were Davis Coppola, fifth, 20:04.69; Grant Zilka, seventh, 20:15.56; and Thomas Hammel, 10th, 20:52.82.
Strong start
The varsity girls also had a good beginning to the season.
Rebecca Anderson had the best finish for Decorah, crossing the finish line 12th in 22:00.65. Senior Abby Halverson toured the course to a 33rd place finish in 23:49.04. Stopping the clock back-to-back were Annalise Skrade and Danielle Losen. Skrade finished 36th in 23:58.04, while Losen had a time of 23:59.27, good for 37th place. Rounding out the team score in 40th place overall was Brynn Storhoff in 24:12.57.
Also running varsity were juniors Madison Tollefson and Mairi Sessions. Tollefson placed 49th in 24:34.31, while Sessions crossed the finish line in 24:36.32, good for 50th.
In the JV race, the Vikes took first with 30 points ahead of Center Point-Urbana’s 58.
Scoring for Decorah were Elsa Johnson, fourth, 24:29.00; McKenzie Riley, fifth, 24:36.88; Lily Sandhorst, sixth, 24:53.16; Kelly Kathryn, seventh, 24:59.99; and Kamryn Steines, eighth, 25:10.43.
Next meet
The Vikings are off until Tuesday, Sept. 7, when they go to Waverly-Shell Rock, beginning at 4:45 p.m. The All-American cross country meet, held at Luther College, is Saturday, Sept. 11.
