Warrior results
“Nerves and the heat were definitely a factor at our sectional meet. I could tell that a few of our players were really feeling it by the end of the round. This made conditions very difficult to play in, but the boys battled tough,” said South Winn coach Michael Wenthold.
Shaun Klimesh came through on a big stage and played some terrific golf finishing in a tie for second in the in the field among golfers on non-qualifying teams with a 93 (46-47) in 10th spot overall. Sophomore Jordan Baumler fired a 103 (55-48) while Martin Horstman carved out a 104 (55-49). Brady Lensing finished up the scoring with a 109. Others on the course for South Winn included Jacob Bohr (57-58-115) and Jackson Goltz (58-58-116).
“Shaun has spent a lot of time working on his short game, staying after practice, and going above and beyond, so it is good to see all of that work pay off by qualifying for the district meet at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls. I can’t wait to see how he does,” added Coach Wenthold.

Fourth place for TV
“Needless to say, there were a lot of red faces and tired boys after the rugged 18-hole event contested in the sweltering conditions. With the course soggy from heavy weekend rains, it felt more like a rainforest than a golf course at times,” noted TV Coach John Reicks.
Trojan sophomore Oliver Schmitt (48-45-93) continued his solid post-season play to earn an at-large district berth at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls. Fresh off his sixth-place finish in the UIC meet on Monday, Schmitt tied for second with a 93 among golfers on non-qualifying teams and 10th overall to garner his spot in the district field.
Garrett Kurtenbach (47-49-96) was thwarted in his bid for a district berth. The senior started strong but then took a disastrous nine on Hole 5. He quickly righted the ship but at the end of the day his lone really bad hole cost him a chance to advance.
Calvin Bodensteiner (53-49-102) and Caleb Kurtenbach (62-50-112) also counted for the Trojans. Seniors Brody Hackman (60-53-113) and Lance Schmitt (56-68-124) rounded out the Turkey Valley scorecard.
“It was bittersweet to see Garrett come so close to a district berth once again this year. He really put together a stellar career after qualifying for districts as a freshman in 2019,” said Coach Reicks. “COVID-19 completely wiped away his sophomore season, and to just narrowly miss out the last two seasons really stung. We are really going to miss him next season.”
The Trojans also graduate Brody Hackman, Rolin Schmitt and Lance Schmitt.

District competition
Klimesh and Schmitt will compete at the Class 1A District meet Tuesday, May 17, at 10 a.m., at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls.
