Stowe breaks nearly 100-year-old record

By Becky Walz,

A record that has stood since 1929 finally was broken Monday as Decorah senior sprinter Haywood Stowe flew down the track in the 100-meter dash in 11.11 seconds.
“It has been a goal of Haywood’s, so it was great to see the 1929 record finally go down. We had many outstanding efforts from our athletes as we head into conference and state qualifying meets,” said Coach Joel Rollinger.

He wasn’t the only winner of the night for the Decorah boys’ track team at MFL MarMac either, as the Vikings came home with the team title and 13 other gold medals. The Vikings dominated the track, adding up 216 points over the host Bulldogs’ 82 points who took second.
Trey McCain won a pair of individual titles as he won the long jump (18’10”) and 400-meter dash (52.98 seconds). Sweeping the throwing events once again was Joseph Hjelle. The senior tossed the shot put 51 feet 5.5 inches and sent the discus sailing 153 feet 9 inches.
Winning the 200-meter dash was Addae Whitsitt in 23.58 seconds, while Hogan Smith garnered gold in the 800-meter run in 2:05.31. Dakota Johnson notched first in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.40 seconds. Jacob Pipho won the other hurdle event, circling the track in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.29.
Decorah claimed five relay titles as well. The sprint medley of Gavin Groux, Garrett Waskow, Kaiden Quandahl and Hogan Smith broke the tape in 1:41.52. Then it was the shuttle hurdle relay’s turn to win in 1:04.43. Members of the gold-medal squad were Austin Wilkins, Johnson, Groux and Pipho.

The 4×100 stopped the clock first at 45.07 seconds with Wymer, Hjelle, Groux and Stowe teaming up.
