It was a close one.
But it makes it two years in a row for the South Winn boys track and field team claiming the Upper Iowa Conference title, held Thursday in Postville.
The Warrior boys won the team title with 132 points, while North Fayette Valley finished second with 130. Turkey Valley garnered 87 points to finished fifth.
Central Elkader was crowned the girls’ champion with 135, ahead of NFV with 120 and Turkey Valley’s 111 points. South Winn ended the night with 85 points in fifth place.
SW highlights
The South Winn boys had three individuals claim three gold medals.
Kaden Barton-Franzen was the champion in the the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet 6 inches for the title.
Sam Conway was the fastest person on the track in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.80 seconds. He also took second in the 100-meter dash in 11.29 seconds.
Putting up a time of 2:08.10 in the 800-meter run for the gold was senior Isaiah Kruckman.
South Winn also claimed a pair of runner-up finishes in relays. The shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Lukas Weiss, Kaden Bullerman, Aiden Feickert and Brady Ohrt crossed the finish line in 1:09.54. Evan Bushman, Nick Holien, Keagen Streeter and Kruckman came home second in 3:55.07, good for second in the distance medley.
The Warrior women had one gold medal performance. Combining talents for a time of 12:13.62 in the 4×800 were Megan Hageman, Ivey Franzen, Josie Tieskoetter and Ella Willey.
Abby Wagner cleared 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump, good for second. In a time of 5:03.38, Billie Wagner was the 1500-meter runner-up. The 4×200 (Franzen, Allison Hageman, Alyssa Timp, Britney Hageman), 4×400 (Tieskoetter, Morgan Kriener, A. Wagner and Josie Tollefsrud) and the distance medley relay (Kriener, Tollefsrud, Katie Shimek and B. Wagner) also took second.
TV highlights
The Trojan boys had five relays garner the gold. Carson Busta, Troy Schmitt, Marcus Herold and Chase Hayek were the fastest men on the track in the sprint medley relay. They blazed around the oval in 1:41.48. Proving the Trojans can run long distance as well, Rus sell Nieman, Ryan Franzen, Dylan Reicks and Noah Hanson won the 4×800 in 9:00.15.
Herold, Hayek, Hanson and Reicks teamed up in the distance medley relay to sprint to victory in 3:50.83. In the 4×200, Burke Busta, Hayek, Franzen and Herold stopped the clock in 1:36.83, good for gold. The night finished with a gold-medal performance by Hayek, Hanson, Franzen and Reicks in the 4×400 relay. The quartet broke the tape in 3:40.91.
Turkey Valley girls had three events win titles including Jalyssa Blazek in the 1500-meter run. The senior posted the winning time of 5:00.89.
It was Ryann Schmitt, Hailey Elsbernd, Kourtney Schmidt and Blazek joining forces in the distance medley for the conference title in 4:36.50. In the 4×100, R. Schmitt, Olivia Snyder, Kara Reicks and Josie Weber took first in 54.95 seconds.
The big one
Thursday is the state qualifying meet for both South Winn and Turkey Valley. Both will be at Ed-Co at 4 p.m.
The state qualifying meets determine who will compete at state, which is Thursday through Saturday, May 19-21, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The top performance at all sites qualifies, followed by the 12 next best times/distances from across the state, for a total of 24 per event.
