Area teams converged on West Union Thursday to compete in the annual Upper Iowa Conference meet, with the South Winn boys collecting 170 points. North Fayette Valley was the runner-up with 154, followed by MFL MarMac with 129. Turkey Valley garnered 74 points to finish fourth.
By one point it was the NFV claiming the girls’ title with 122 points over Central Elkader. The Trojans’ 106 points earned them sixth, followed by South Winn with 97 points.
SW shines bright
Consistency was key as the Warriors won five events Thursday, three coming from relays. Individually it was Dominic Sisneros crowned the 400-meter hurdle champion in 58.45 seconds. The senior also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay of Keagen Streeter, Parker Timp and Brady Ohrt to a gold-medal performance, turning in a time of 1:11.43. Teaming up in the 4×100 relay were Cael Kuboushek, Evan Bushman, Sam Conway and Jacob Herold to produce a winning time of 44.80 seconds. Bushman, Kuboushek, Toby Conway and Herold was the winning foursome in the 4×200 in 1:34.80. In the 3200-meter race it was Isaiah Kruckman stopping the clock first at 10:41.62.
The Lady Warriors ended the night without a gold; however, the squad had five runner-up finishes. Billie Wagner was second in both the 1500-meter run (5:18.84) and the 3000-meter run (11:18.80). Emma Houdek was second in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet 8.5 inches, while it was fellow senior Emmaleigh Ohrt claiming silver in the discus with a throw of 117 feet even. Megan Hageman, Josie Tieskoetter, Becca Wagner and Morgan Kriener were the runner-up 4×800 team in 11:30.29.
Trojan highlights
Five events were victorious for the Lady Trojans, including four in which Jalyssa Blazek played a part. The junior won the 800-meter run in 2:26.65 and anchored three relays to gold. The sprint medley quartet of Kara Reicks, Clare Courtney, Olivia Snyder and Blazek raced to victory in 1:55.18. Later Blazek teamed up with Josie Weber, Cambree Kruse and Jaycie Byrne in the 4×800 to win in 10:26.32. In the distance medley (4:25.88) it was Reicks, J. Weber, Byrne and Blazek winning gold. The successful night was capped off by the gold-medal performance by 4×100 (53.42). Members of the team were Reicks, Snyder, Courtney and Kylie Wurzer.
In the boys’ races, Noah Hanson, Chase Hayek, Marcus Herold and Kalvin Langreck combined for a pair of relay victories, winning both the 4×400 (3:41.40) and distance medley (3:51.09). Langreck also broke the tape in the 800-meter run in 2:10.60.
State-qualifying
The Warriors and Trojans will also be at the same Class 1A state-qualifying meet at Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 13, at 4 p.m.
