SW girls, Decorah boys take first at SW Invite

It was a hotly contested race Tuesday at South Winn Golf and Country Club, with the Warrior cross country teams hosting the annual South Winn invite.
With local schools lining up at the start line, it was the South Winn girls’ claiming the top spot with 41 points, with the boys finishing fourth with 100 points. Taking the boys’ title with 40 points was the Decorah boys, while the girls were the runners-up with 57 points.

Taking first, fourth
The South Winn girls place two of the top-10 harriers. They were led by Class 1A No. 3 Billie Wagner, who finished third overall with a time of 19:29.90. Sophomore Josie Tieskoetter came in sixth overall in 21:07.70. Freshman Karissa Wenthold just missed the top 10 with her time of 21:35.10, in 11th place followed closely by Class 1A No. 29 Megan Hageman in 12th. Hageman posted a time of 21:38.00. Rounding out the team score in 17th place with a time of 21:56.60 was Anna Dietzenbach. Ella Willey also toured the course to a time of 23:04.50, good for 35th place.
The Warrior varsity had five runners on the course with Isaiah Kruckman leading the way with a bronze finish. The senior concluded the race with a time of 17:06.80. Crossing the finish line in 18:22.10 in 26th place was Omar Flores, while Ethan Maldonado stopped the clock at 18:34.90, good for 28th place. Coming home in a time of 19:23.80 in 33rd place was Hunter Wagner with Dawson Wenthold completing the team tally in 41st place in 20:40.60.

Viking highlights
“As coaches we are proud of the mental and physical efforts made to compete tonight,” said Decorah boys’ coach Brad Johansen.
Class 1A No. 1 Riley Witt of Saint Ansgar was the individual champion of the boys’ race. The senior had a time of 16:21.80.
Arlo Hayes was the first Viking to cross the finish line, taking silver in 17:02.60. Also making their way into the top-10 were Larsson Shockey and Izaak Eichinger. Shockey posted a time of 17:36.80 in seventh with Eichinger on his heels in eighth in 17:41.00. In 12th place was Cade Olson touring the course in 17:53.90 with Henry Weis coming in at 17:59.30, good for 16th. Also competing in the varsity race were Bennett Schutte, 20th, 18:07.70; Jacob Magner, 21st, 18:09.60; Davis Coppola, 23rd, 18:12.80; Grant Zilka, 25th, 18:17.70; and Landan Folkedahl, 27th, 18:30.00.
Back on the course following an illness, Rebecca Anderson led the Lady Vikes with a fifth-place finish in 20:23.50. Sophomore Danielle Losen toured the course in 21:18.30 to finish eighth. Three other Vikings were in the top-20 to conclude the team score including Brynn Storhoff, 15th, 21:48.80; Abby Halverson, 18th, 21:57.40; and Annalise Skrade, 20th, 21:59.20. Others on the course for the Decorah varsity girls’ squad were Kathryn Kelly, 21st, 22:04.20; McKenzie Riley, 22nd, 22:13.60; Elsa Johnson, 23rd, 22:15.70; Madison Tollefson, 25th, 22:19.50; Brielle Buresh, 31st, 22:29.60; and Grace Brynsaas, 33rd, 22:35.30.

Trojans on the course
After an even first lap around the course with Class 1A No. 7 Haley Meyer of Kee and Class 1A No. 3 Billie Wagner of South Winn, it was Turkey Valley’s Class 1A No. 2 showing her dominance as she pulled away from the duo to break the tape in 18:51.10. Fellow Trojan senior Cambree Kruse cruised to a seventh-place finish, stopping the clock at 21:12.60.
In junior varsity action, Hailey Elsbernd posted a time of 26:37.70, good for 31st place. In the boys’ JV race, Dale Schwamman came home 15th in 19:47.90. Also on the course for the Trojans were Lucas Hanson, 47th, 22:47.90 and Bode Balk, 62nd, 26:40.00.
