TV’s Blazek breaks tape at Waukon; Decorah boys champs

Once again, the Decorah boys were crowned the champions of the Waukon cross country invite, sweeping both the varsity and junior varsity titles. The varsity girls were the runners-up, while the JV topped the five-team field.

Viking leaders
Posting an average time of 18:03, the Class 3A No. 11 Decorah varsity boys put all seven runners in the top 20. Starmont’s Charlie Sieck was the first to cross the finish line in the varsity boys’ race, clocking in at 17:25.82. 
Viking Arlo Hayes won silver, traversing the course in 17:31.81. Finishing back-to-back were Larsson Shockey and Izaak Eichinger in fifth and sixth places, respectively. Shockey came through with a time of 17:59.51, while his teammate ended his race at 18:00.01. Bennett Schutte sprinted to the finish line in 18:18.57, claiming 10th. Concluding the team score was Henry Weis. He earned 13th in 18:22.16. One second later, Cade Olson took 14th in 18:23.50. Jake Magner rounded out the Vikings. He earned 19th in 18:52.05.
The JV boys posted 27 points for the win.
Scoring for the junior varsity boys were Landan Folkedahl, third, 19:11.08; Davis Coppola, fourth, 19:16.50; Grant Zilka, fifth, 19:21.16; Adrian Huang, eighth, 19:29.56; and Thomas Hammel, ninth, 19:32.06.
“Half of the team had season best times on a challenging course, so I’d say it was a very good effort,” commented Coach Brad Johansen.
The Decorah varsity girls had an average time of 22:26.
Taking sixth (fourth in team standings) for the Vikings was Danielle Losen. She had a time of 21:38.98. Two places back was Annalise Skrade crossing the finish line in 22:09.93, good for eighth overall. With a time off 22:32.81, was Brynn Storhoff placing 11th overall. It took 22:51.45 for McKenzie Riley to go around the course, taking 16th overall. Coming home in 22:56.57 to take 19th overall was Elsa Johnson. Also running was Abby Halverson, 22nd, 23:01.93 and Kathryn Kelly, 27th, 23:03.50.
The JV girls claimed seven of the top 10 spots for the team victory. Brielle Buresh led the team to the finish line in 23:08.59, earning silver. In third it was Lily Sandhorst in 23:10.21. Others on the course finishing in the top 10 were Madison Tollefson, fourth, 23:16.52; Kamryn Steines, fifth, 23:19.26; Grace Brynsaas, sixth, 23:35.63; Grace Bilkre, eighth, 23:42.26; and Addison Lukes-Smith, 10th, 24:23.03.

TV competitors
Turkey Valley also had several runners on the course with senior Jalyssa Blazek breaking the tape as the girls’ varsity individual champion. Class 1A No. 2 runner stopped the clock at 19:06.80 for gold after finishing third a year ago. Cambree Kruse toured the course 22:40.78, good for 14th.
In junior varsity action for the Trojans, Dale Schwamman finished 27th in 21:30.88, while Bode Balk ran the 5K in 27:08.93, good for 84th. Hailey Elsbernd competed in the girls’ JV race, finishing in 27:31.98, earning 40th place.

Coming up
Decorah has quite the break before seeing competition again Thursday, Sept. 30, at Western Dubuque at 4:15 p.m. The Trojans are off even longer with their next race scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, at Crestwood at 9:30 a.m.
