By Becky Walz,
The Decorah boys’ track and field team felt the heat Thursday despite the cool temps. Vying for the top spot with the Vikings was Denver, with Decorah coming out on top of the Waukon Early Bird meet with 155 points, while the Cyclones finished with 149 points.
“It felt great getting to compete again in track and field. It’s been over a year for most athletes, so we are grateful for the opportunity,” said Coach Joel Rollinger. “We did some very good things, but as expected after such a long hiatus, there are plenty of techniques to ‘coach up’ and improve on. We will move the needle in the right direction.”
Thursday’s highlights
Decorah had numerous gold medal performances, claiming the top spot in six events.
Joseph Hjelle propelled the shot put 49 feet 10 inches to take one of the individual field event titles, as did Ethan Frana in the discus. Frana launched the discus 136 feet 2 inches for his gold. Sprinting to victory in 4:41.42 in the 1600-meter run was senior Brady Hogan.
Three relays broke the tape for the Vikings including the 4×100 weightmen. Combining forces were Frana, Thomas Ostlie, Noah Breitenbach-Dirks and Hjelle in 51.11 seconds. The 4×800 quartet of Brady Hogan, August Witt, Trey McCain and Kyle Renken broke the tape in 8:55.04. Also turning in a winning performance was the distance medley foursome of Charlie Robinson, Haywood Stowe, Cael Luum and Bennett Schutte in 3:55.66.
Seven other events were runner-up, including Hjelle in the discus, Hogan Smith in the 800-meter run, Jacob Pipho in the 400-meter hurdles, along with four relays — shuttle hurdle (Austin Wilkins, Kody Bodensteiner, Briggs Duwe, Pipho), 4×200 (Drew Snyder, Duwe, Corbyn Palmer, Ben Wymer), 4×400 (Kyle Renken, Duwe, Snyder, Schutte) and the sprint medley (Addae Whitsitt, Luzum, Stowe and Schutte).
