By Becky Walz,
It has been a successful start to the final week of the regular season for the Decorah boys’ tennis team as they captured the conference title Monday.
NEIC/WaMaC tourney
Decorah Boys Tennis traveled to Waverly Shell-Rock for the combined conference tennis tournament Monday. The tournament is comprised of teams from the NEIC and WaMac, including of Decorah, Waverly Shell-Rock, Marion, South Tama, Maquoketa and Independence.
The tournament is a flighted bracket where the No. 1 players play each other, the No. 2 players play each other, etc. Decorah came in as the favorite, but Waverly Shell-Rock and Marion have strong teams as well. Morning play started with singles split between the high school and Wartburg courts, which is always tough to split the squad up and keep up the energy.
There were numerous tough matches, but at the end of the day Decorah swept singles with six individual champions. After coming back together to have everyone play doubles at the same location, Decorah earned two more doubles wins and a doubles runner-up, narrowly missing out on a perfect day.
Earning singles titles for the day were Caden Branum, Daniel Skrade, Landon Baker, Brendan Hunter, Michael Njus and Lian Chamberlain. Crowned as doubles champions were Branum/Skrade and Baker/Hunter while Aidan Nalean-Carlson and Chamberlain were runners-up.
Coach Anderson said of the day, “We knew this would test our physical endurance, but I’m thrilled with how everyone performed as we move towards our district competition Monday at Luther College.”
