Vikes face healthy competition at Cedar Falls

The Decorah cross country teams laced up their sneakers Thursday to compete at the Rich Engel Classic held in Cedar Falls.
The varsity boys ranked 13th in Class 3A, finished ninth overall with 259 points. Class 4A No. 15 Iowa City Liberty finished first with 82, edging Class 4A No. 7 Cedar Falls by one point. In the girls’ team race, Decorah collected 343 to finished 13th. Claiming the team title was Class 4A No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead.

Varsity boys
The Viking boys posted an average time of 18:30.4, with a spread of 36 seconds.
The individual winner was Class 3A No. 2 Eli Naumann of Western Dubuque. He had a time of 16:24.7.
Decorah was led by Arlo Hayes. The senior toured the course in 18:04.1, good for 32nd. The next to cross the finish line was Bennett Schutte in 18:31.7 in 52nd place. Stopping the clock within two second of each other was senior Larsson Shockey and sophomore Henry Weis. Shockey toured the course in 18:36.9 to earn 58th place, while Weis knocked out a time of 18:38.8 to finish 58th. Rounding out the team score in 61st place was Izaak Eichinger, posting a time of 18:40.1.
Others on the course for the Vikes were Jacob Magner, 90th, 19:01.0; Cade Olson, 109th, 19:17.7; Davis Coppola, 131st, 19:39.4; Landan Folkedahl, 133rd, 19:42.2; and Grant Zilka, 137th, 19:43.9.
“We competed much harder today and this has to be our normal effort to see success,” said boys’ coach Brad Johansen.

Varsity girls
“As we battle through some illnesses this season, several athletes have stepped up into leadership roles on the course. I am proud of the hard work and great attitudes I am seeing throughout this team,” said girls’ coach Cristy Nimrod.
Decorah had an average time of 23:44.8 and posted a spread of 1:17.3.
Taking first overall was Class 4A No. 5 Alli Macke. She had a time of 19:08.2.
Decorah was led by sophomore Brynn Storhoff with a time of 23:06.7 to claim 59th place. Less than 20 seconds back was Danielle Losen in 64th place, stopping the clock at 23:23.4. Freshman Elsa Johnson blazed the course to a time of 23:52.8 to bring home 69th place in the team standings, while Abby Halverson finished 70th in 23:56.8. Freshman McKenzie Riley concluded the team score in 81st place in 24:23.9.
The Vikings had five others on the course including Kathryn Kelly, 102nd, 24:29.3; Grace Brynsaas, 105th, 24:37.0; Kamryn Steins, 107th, 24:37.2; Lily Sandhorst, 108th, 24:37.6; and Mairi Sessions, 117th, 25:09.2.

Back in action
Today, Tuesday, Sept. 21, the Vikings are at Waukon at 4:30 p.m.
