Vikes, Trojans crown champs at Winneshiek County triangular meet

By Becky Walz,

Teams were crowned the unofficial champions of Winneshiek County Tuesday night at the Winneshiek County Triangular golf meet, featuring the boys and girls golf squads from Decorah, South Winn and Turkey Valley.
Playing at Silvercrest Golf Course in Decorah, the teams battled the chilly temps and wind.
When the final ball had been put in the cup, it was the Decorah boys that took home one title and the Turkey Valley girls the other.

Boys notes
The Vikings put up 175 strokes to take the title, with South Winn second with 186 strokes and Turkey Valley third with 212.
Firing 42s, Decorah’s Jackson Knoke and Ben Bockman took the medalists honors on the par-36 course.
Other Decorah scores were Ethan Holthaus (45), Gavin Stortz (46), Baylor Bohr (47), Shlok Patel (47), Brody Hanson (53) and Lane Rolfs (64).
Shaun Klimesh and Carson Wenthold both put up 44s to lead the Warrior effort. For Klimesh it was his career best by eight strokes as he tied his teammate for third place. South Winn also had Jordan Baumler fire a 48, while Brandon Frana completed the team score with a 50. Other Warriors on the course were Logan Baumler and Martin Horstman, both carding 512.
“All-in-all, we had a good meet. The boys competed well on a cold day and a quirky course that provides some challenges that we don’t often see. Going forward, we’ll really need to focus on decision-making if we’re going to be as successful as we can be on courses like this,” said SW boys’ coach Mike Wenthold.
“The Trojans placed a distant third overall, but we still had a lot of positives on the night. Our three dual-sport kids all got a chance to play, and they responded pretty well,” said Trojan coach John Reicks.
Senior Kalvin Langreck led the way with a 48, while sophomore Calvin Bodensteiner shot a 52. Freshmen Caleb Kurtenbach (53) and Braylen Byrne (59) also counted for the Trojans. Senior newcomer Cael Wickham (59) and veteran Lance Schmitt (62), as well as freshman Oliver Schmitt (64) and Nelson Reicks (78) also toured the course for the Trojans.

Big win
The Turkey Valley girls secured the victory with a 251. Decorah was 11 strokes behind with 262. South Winn shot a 277.
The Trojans were led by senior medalist Ali Hoffert, who led the way with a 54.
“Ali really drove the ball well off the tee. Now we just need to clean up her short game and she has the potential to card sub-50 rounds consistently,” said the TV coach.
The Lady Trojans got a big boost from Kylie Wurzer as the dual-sport athlete came in with a 63. Emma Hanson (67) Mariah Throndson (67) and Bella Gruenberg (72) rounded out the TV scorecard.
Decorah’s Annika Lensch came through with a 59 as the runner-up. Jane Murphy fashioned a 65 while Brooke Norby and Lexie Hauber ended up with 69s for the Vikings. Hope Stahl was also on the course and ended the day with a 74.
For South Winn it was Sydney Becker leading the way with a 60 with Ruthie Frana on her heels with a 61. With a 68 was Brooke Steffens, while Hannah Pahl notched an 88 on her card.
“In comparison with the field, our girls did well,” said SW girls’ coach Glenna Munuswamy. “It’s good for our girls to play these tough courses to prepare them for future meets and the postseason.”
