Viking harriers showcase talent at Dick Pollitt Classic

By Becky Walz,

Taking on some of the best teams in the area, the Decorah girls’ and boys’ cross country teams competed in the annual Dick Pollitt Go-Hawk Classic Tuesday in Waverly. The Viking boys came out on top of the standings.
“We showed improvement from last week. If we can become more disciplined in our approach we will continue to get faster,” said the boys’ coach Brad Johansen.
The Classic utilizes a different scoring method than other meets. Each high school squad is divided into grades. Harriers competed against runners only at their age level. To form an overall team score, the squad’s top-five runners, with no more than two representatives for each grade level, are combined. Individual grade level races are scored by each team’s top-three runners.
