The Decorah boys’ track team took second place at the West Delaware Invitational Thursday in Manchester. The Vikings racked up 142 points to finish behind Xavier’s 164.
In all, the Red and Blue collected six golds. Joseph Hjelle was a two-time champion, winning both the shot put (48’1”) and discus (148’2”). Junior Jacob Pipho was the other individual winner, breaking the tape in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.78 seconds.
Three relays also claimed the top spot during the invite. Decorah was victorious in the shuttle hurdle, stopping the clock at 1:07.70. Members of the winning relay were Briggs Duwe, Dakota Johnson, Kody Bodensteiner and Pipho. The Vikings boys also won the distance medley relay. The quartet of Addae Whitsitt, Haywood Stowe, Bennett Schutte and Brady Hogan combined for a time of 3:43.68. The night ended with a 4×100 victory by Whitsitt, Cael Luzum, Drew Snyder and Stowe. The foursome completed the race in 44.64 seconds for gold.
Decorah also had five runner-up finishes include Schutte in the 800-meter run (2:14.23), Hogan Smith in the 1600-meter run (4:54.33), the 4×400 relay (4:04.99), 4×800 (1:49.25) and sprint medley relay (1:49.25).
Coming up
Later this week, several events are headed to compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, while other athletes will compete at Waukon Friday, April 23, at 4:30 p.m.
