The Decorah girls’ and boys’ cross country teams took their talents to Epworth Thursday, returning home with fifth and sixth place finishes respectively in the field.
Men
The Class 3A No. 18 Viking men tallied 149 points to take fifth place as Class 4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Kennedy secured the top spot in the team standings with 42. Decorah had an average time of 18:20.7 with a spread of 46.4 seconds.
At the line first for the Vikes was junior Henry Weis in 17:58.0, taking 20th overall. Grant Zilka stopped the clock at 18:08.2 to claim 24th, while Cade Olson was 27th in 18:12.2. In 18:40.2, Davis Coppola took 38th place with Jake Magner capping off the team score in 40th in 18:44.4.
Others running varsity for Decorah were Landyn Hook (46th, 18:53.8), Thomas Hammel (50th, 19:00.4), Reid Berns (58th, 19:15.2) and Riley Berns (71st, 19:45.6).
“This was a great effort with 24 of the 44 boys posting season-best times on a very difficult course,” said boys’ coach Brad Johansen.
Women
The Decorah women finished sixth in the team standings with 141 points. Class 2A top-ranked Monticello secured the team title with 44 points. The Lady Vikes posted an average time of 22:43.1 and spread of 52.6 seconds.
“We did a great job on the hills and our pack running was strong in this race,” said Decorah girls’ coach Cristy Nimrod.
Leading the pack to the line was Ana Simon. The freshman’s time of 22:18.0 earned her 23rd overall with teammate Lily Sandhorst taking 24th in 22:34.1. Brynn Storhoff was the third Viking to the finish line in 22:42.0, good for 28th place. Touring the course in 22:40.8, Danielle Losen finished 30th and Deborah Hougen rounded out the team score in 37th place. She had a time of 23:10.6.
Also Viking varsity runners included Grace Brynsaas (39th, 23:12.8), Natalie stevens (42nd, 23:20.0), Kamryn Steines (48th, 23:38.6), Grace Blikre (50th, 23:48.1) and Annalise Skrade (64th, 24:41.7).
At Calmar
The Vikings will compete at South Winn Golf & Country Club tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 4) in the annual South Winn invite at 4:45 p.m.
