By Becky Walz,
It was the perfect way to start the week Monday as the Vikings hosted the Decorah Invite.
The Vikes won the meet with 185 points. Waukon took second with 165. South Winn finished the night with 50 points in fifth place.
Strong effort
The Vikings had 13 events take first place Monday night.
Five individuals stood atop the medal stand. Haywood Stowe started the night strong. The senior won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet 5 inches. Later in the night, Stowe claimed his second gold in the 200-meter dash in 22.53 seconds. Joseph Hjelle dominated the throwing events, winning gold in both the discus and shot put. He hurled the weight 49 feet 3.5 inches and captured the discus title with a throw of 131 feet 9.5 inches.
Cade Olson broke tape in the 400-meter dash in 54.88 seconds. It was Austin Wilkins stopping the clock first in the 110-meter hurdles. He had a time of 15.91 seconds. Senior Hogan Smith was the winner in the 800-meter run, sprinting to victory in 2:08.68.
Seven relays were also golden Monday night. The Vikes’ sprint medley started the running events off with a gold in 1:40.84. Members of the winning relay were Ben Wymer, Wilkins, Jacob Pipho and Bennett Schutte. Soon after the 4×800 relay of Olson, Trey McCain, Brayden Hartl and Smith claimed the title in 8:45.89.
In a time of 1:06.04, the shuttle hurdle relay team of Wilkins, Dakota Johnson, Cade Averhoff and Gavin Groux won the event. Sharing the victory in the distance medley relay were Addae Whitsitt, Stowe, Pipho and Schutte in 3:48.49. Decorah proved speed was another power as they took to the oval in the 4×200 relay. In 1:36.77, Groux, Kelley Gates, Kaiden Quandahl and B. Wymer sprinted to victory.
The weightmen proved they are talented in the field and on the track. Cashton Riehle, Oliver Brummel, Fisher Tweeten and Ezra Vorvick clocked in at 55.87 seconds. The 4×400 relay ended the night on top. The quartet of Pipho, Schutte, Stowe and Whitsitt topped the field in 3:37.21.
“The boys track and field team has been fortunate the past two Monday nights. Our meets have had the best weather day of those weeks. Hopefully, Mother Nature will turn around and allow our spring athletic teams to enjoy a long string of enjoyable weather. Our efforts reflected the decent weather. We were able to come away with 13 event victories. We continue to make steady improvement as the season progresses. Thanks again to all the great workers and volunteers who help pull off a very efficient well run track and field meet,” said Viking head coach Joel Rollinger.
Warrior power
South Winn came home with just one gold as Isaiah Kruckman ran away from the field in the 3200-meter run to win in 10:29.28. The senior also claimed a bronze in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.27.
