Warriors stay alive in postseason

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn boys’ basketball team (14-8) edged a district win over Tripoli at home Monday, 72-63, to advance. Tripoli ends the season with a 13-9 overall record.
Both teams hit the hardwood running, with senior Keagen Streeter putting up the Warriors’ six points. Tripoli took the ball right to the room on each possession and claimed the advantage 19-12 after the opening period. South Winn fell behind by as many as seven in the second period, but a treys by Braiden Todd and a pair of threes by Kole Hageman spearheaded the comeback as the Warriors made up the difference and tied the game 31-31 on a Carson Wenthold bucket before the half.

Back-to-back shots by C. Wenthold and K. Streeter, combined with a trey by Dawson Wenthold, gave the Warriors the 38-33 lead in the third with 6:25 on the clock. Tripoli wasn’t ready to back down as the Panthers stormed back to make it 48-48 with 1:11 left in the third, eventually pulling ahead 50-48 with eight minutes to play. With the game and season on the line, the Red and White went to work on both ends of the floor, causing turnovers and putting the ball in the hoop. K. Streeter made it a tie game at 59-all with 3:50 left. In the closing 3:02, the Warriors managed to outscore the Panthers 8-2 for the win.
“What a great first-round game with a great atmosphere and quality basketball.  Tripoli came out fast and really beat us at our own game early. We settled in the second quarter and were able to tie it up by halftime. The second half was back-and-forth, and with about three minutes left the press finally wore them down enough to generate a couple big steals and buckets to put us up,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “Individually, I want to send a big shout out to my three seniors. We talk about enjoying the game and leaving it all out on the floor. What a way for them to finish their final home game at South Winn.”
Leading the way for the Warriors with 19 points, three assists and three steals was C. Wenthold. Putting up 15 points to go with three rebounds and three steals was D. Wenthold, while K. Streeter contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.
Next, the Warriors will face No. 2 North Linn who is undefeated with a 21-0 mark in Coggon Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. The winner moves on to the district final Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., at a location still to be determined.
